Is the only difference between the two is the xl being street legal? Also are parts interchangable?
Thanks -ben

The XR is better equipped for off-road riding than the XL. The XL is a bit of a compromise as it has been engineered to be more comfortable for the street. It still is not great on the street and of course not great in the dirt. I have an XL250R and honestly would rather have an XR that has been made street legal with lights, etc. There are "Baja" kits to do just that and you wind up with a bike that is street legal but much better for the dirt than the XL. But depends on your own preferences. For me, its about the suspension and the weight. The XR has better suspension and weighs less. Parts interchangeability I think depends on the years.
Lots of stuff will interchange between the 2, especially if it's a dual carb Xr like the XL. XL had your standard road legal lighting, lower seat height, metal tank. Im sure the front was raked out a little more for stability on the road. Big long thread on advrider for the XL.
I miss my 86 xl600r. Fun bike with gobs of power that will smoke a lot of modern Japanese enduros. Sold it because it was getting tired and wanted to upgrade. Bought a brp to replace it.
