New here. Have a few Questions.

Newbie here. So i grew up on trikes mostly 86 honda 125m. But don't know much about the 81 250R. I have a 99 honda 300ex. A guy locally to me wants to trade his 1981 honda 250R with 300 hondaline kit, for my 300ex. His has fresh carb rebuild new front tire, also FMF powercore slip on. The bads needs rear brake caliperClick image for larger version.

ID:	241074 and thats it. My honda 300ex has big gun exhaust, big gun over red CDI box. Aftermarket bars. Just Curious if this is a good trade. And also a is the 250r a good tike? heard it was wicked fast. Does the 300 kit give it more top speed? Any input is appreciated just trying to school myself in all this.

Thanks. Pictures of my 300 and the 250R will be atatched.

I'd do it in a heartbeat! Generally, no. You won't get more speed from the bigger displacement. You will get more top speed by gearing "up". Now if it couldn't pull to top rpms in fifth gear in stock trim, then you may be able to gain a little bit of top speed assuming that the exhaust and intake/carb have good flow. You probably won't be able to notice the difference. What it will do is get you there a lot quicker.

To add my two pennies your 300 is still pretty common even being Hondas red headed step child of the ex family. You can always get another one. The 250r on the other hand, a bit harder to come by. I'd do it unless your in love your ex

The 81 250r had rear drum brakes. The 82 had disc. Maybe he swapped them over, maybe it's an 82. I'm not that much of an expert on first gens to be able to tell.

Again I'm like most guys on here that would rather the 250r, so don't let it sound like I'm trying to sway you in either direction. But do some research into how hard it will be to come by a piston and ring set for the Hondaline 300 kit. Maybe people came up with a modern solution, I'm not sure. I own a 2nd gen, not a first gen. Nor do I own a big bore kit. But just some food for thought. So when you go to check it out make sure it's not on its last few hours on that piston. See if he knows when it was last rebuilt.

In stock form, they are a beautiful trike. All modded up for racing with period correct parts, they are cool as heck. It's missing some pieces, which are on eBay quite readily like the heat shields, etc. headlight might be pricy though. Not sure what they go for these days. Front wheel has been swapped to a narrower tire. But it's a two stroke big bore trike, what's not fun about that?

Shouldn't take much to get her looking pretty again.

agreed in my area 300ex are a dime a dozen and relatively cheap as low in price as $700 needing TLC. a non running 250r also in my area are still selling for $1500+ and the fun factor in my opinion is night and day. in the short run you can ride it all day and enjoy it in the long run you can buy a 300ex (or 400ex) and have something to ride while you restore the 250r best of both worlds and have something more valuable and rate at the end... again my opinion though hope it helps!

That is an 81 250r 82 250r has plastic air scoops in the front behind the steering head. 81 does not. The 300r topend when set up right are fast. Pistons are almost nonexistent. Frontend is 200x. Personaly Id trade like stated 300ex are dime a dozen .I cant tell if that has the 81 or 82 250r swingarm. 81 is setup for drum brake and 82 setup for disc.I like the Yammy in the pic with the 250r.

Do you have a repair manual? If not, you can download one at oscarmayer.net. That will tell you how to replace your axle bearings.
