ATC185S Motor question

What is a the value of a good running 185s motor? No smoke, lots of power, pretty much nothing wrong with it. A guy I know who deals in the ATC/ATV salvage business says he usually gets around 300-350 for a good running motor, not including carb, pull starter, etc, just motor only. Sound reasonable?

Sounds too high to me. I would think 100-200 with carb and recoil. To put in perspective, I bought a perfect, running, XL185 engine (same engine except manual clutch and kick start) with carb, coil, cdi, harness, and mounts for $75 at a swap meet 2 yrs ago.

I disagree with Drew seeing as a 185 pull starter alone can bring $100-$150. It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay, but I'd figure at least $250.

Between 100-200 with carb and recoil??? You are kidding. Just go one ebay and take a look at what people are paying for a 185S recoil....over 100 bucks easy. You got a smoking deal on that XL185 motor with those accessories and in that condition for 75 bucks.

I agree with Fabio that it's worth whatever someone will pay. I didn't take into account the recoil, which seems to command a hefty asking price, no idea why though. I see people asking all kinds of prices for things, but u do wonder, who's paying these prices? Ebay makes me laugh sometimes. You look at what items are listed for, then you look at completed auctions, and see what stuff actually sells for, and sometimes that tells a better story. I sell all my stuff at swap meets or on eBay in regular auctions, no buy it now, and low starting bids. I love it when I sell something that someone else has listed for more, and they're stuck sitting on theirs.

Good luck selling your engine, I hope you get what you want for it. And for your sake, I hope I am way out of line on the price!

They get good coin for the pull starts because the demand is greater than the supply, and they do get every penny. I sold two that weren't in very good condition at all recently.

A quick look at ebay completed auctions would give you a good idea of what they are going for. At least a good starting point .
