The Merge_88 Honda "Super 200X" build. Ol Duece, Jmoozy27, and Shep1970 inspired!

For the last couple of years, I've spent quite a few hours reading and re-reading the build threads of Ol Duece, Jmoozy27, and Shep1970's 200SX/200X conversions on second generation 200X frames. I've always thought that this build would be the perfect all around trike for me. I've rode 86/87 200X's for years and they've been a favorite of mine due to their power to weight ratio and great handling. Then a couple years ago I got a 250SX and really liked riding it due to the auto clutch, electric start and reverse but the rear suspension just beat the heck out of me in anything rough! Well early this year, I came across a clean 86' 200SX that I couldn't pass up. I had initially bought it to start this conversion.....UNTIL my son took a liking to it! DANG, Dad's plan went off course!!! Thank goodness the wife's 250EX has caught his eye though and he's been riding it quite a bit and I'm teaching him to ride my 86' 200X!

Fast forward to Trikefest this year when I crossed paths with Shep1970 and his Super X!!! It was a great bit of time checking his trike out and listening to his tips on building one..........after that I COULDN'T get the conversion out of my head! I immediately started looking for a suitable 86/87 200X to do the swap on. As luck would have it, I sold a 86' that I had swapped some parts off of for my other 200X this year. I got in contact with the guy who bought it and he was willing to sell it back, I couldn't get to his house fast enough!

So today I officially got started on the conversion. I was able to strip the 200X of the engine, exhaust, wiring harness, pegs, and anything else that needed to come off for the conversion to begin. I also got a bit of a start on stripping down the SX, mainly it's body work. Next, I'm going to give them both a good pressure washing and cleaning before going any further.

The plan is to swap over the motor and electronics far enough to get it running and riding first. I like to make sure mechanically everything is sound before pulling everything apart for the paint/cosmetic work. Once I do get it to the cosmetic stage, I plan on pretty much sticking to the 86/87 200X color scheme but with the 87 decals with a slight twist on them. I also intend to find an 83/84 250R front end for this Super X like I have on my 86' 200X, I really like that suspension on the 200X along with an 85' 250R headlight.

I hope to be able to help others that are thinking about doing a similar conversion. I know without the other three build threads of Ol Duece, Jmoozy27, and Shep1970 that I wouldn't have gotten the motivation to do this one. Here's a few pics of the victim, the soon to be Super X, and my other 86' 200X.

Well post up your progress. I've got that bug a while ago to do this and bought a couple 200sx quads for parts.
If its on the internet its got to be true they can't put any lie's on the internet

Made some progress! Stock engine is out of the 200X and got both bikes cleaned up. I hate to say it but I ALMOST feel bad about taking this 200SX apart....HHAHAHAHA not really, the thing has an extra wheel it's the STRANGEST dang thing! It really is a nice well kept low hour machine, but if you've ever rode one then you know they really aren't that much fun as far as handling or suspension ..............but the little motor is where it shines! It will be a very nice donor of many parts for the Super X. I swapped out the tires and replaced them with the tires from the quad. I don't know if those will stay, but they'll work for now! Next step will be making the motor mounts from the templates that Shep has so generously sent to me!

Made some good progress this evening. I came home to find in the mail the templates Shep sent me! These are the templates that he designed and used to build his green framed auto 200X/SX conversion. When I saw his conversion at Trikefest this year, I really liked the way his motor mounts looked like they came from Honda that way. My whole goal with this build is to create a trike that looks like it was a factory built trike from that era.

Time to get serious and remove the mounts that won't be used. The lower rear right mount and the middle rear right mount must be removed:

Here are Shep's bracket templates taped in place. Next I'll be fabricating the new brackets and getting the spacers needed to shift the motor so the chain lines up.

Looks good, you might as well shave off the clutch cable holders on the downtube also. You wont need em....

    Today was a GOOD day!!!

The day started out at 6 this morning turning wrenches on this project. I got everything in the mock-up stage......new motor mounts welded in, motor bolted in, chain on, pegs back on, throttle on, reverse cable hooked up, wiring temporarily zip tied in place, etc. Even took it on a little spin up the driveway, this trike is going to be a WHOLE LOT of fun! Pretty neat to have electric start with back up pull start, reverse, semi-auto and good suspension in a light weight trike!

The one thing I did today that Shep suggested was to enlarge the holes on the existing motor mount brackets so the engine would sit high enough in the engine cradle that the drain plug could be removed. Great advice there, see my picture! I don't have a lot of time this evening to do a big "how to" right now but when I take it all back apart for paint, I'll take more pictures and go in to detail. This really is a pretty simple conversion if you are handy with a welder, grinder, etc to make a few new mounts.

Man, that's looking good! I know that the regular Autox conversion was fairly easy too. I knew it had been done, but I really didn't believe that it was that simple. I'd bet all of these are fairly simple since they're the same basic engine.
