They are different for the 85 vs the 86. Even a few of the early 86's take an 85 kit. You can make one work on the other if you or a friend are a machinist. They work well if you have a functioning decomp and the proper battery but they are not very durable.

As Bob said, don't cheap out on the battery when you find a kit. We've had our kit for going on 6 years. Its on my big bore 350x now, still works great.
