This is what I bought for $160.00. I started collecting parts to restore it to a rider. Its an '86 200x that has been worked over by less than brilliant owners and now i have close to $1200.00 in parts to bring her back to OEM rider status.
I wanted to give up on her but I'm a sucker for a challenge and could've spent the money on my other machines but now I'm just stubborn.
Im starting this thread to let you know what's going on and to get help with it. I'm not familiar with 2nd gen 200's but love to learn.
I will be posting more although I've seen some threads of guys taking their trikes to pristine condition (which interests the hell out of me but I want to ride it and not worry about every little scratch) so this wont be as interesting. It may just show some stupidity on my part but I'm committed to it now.

First off, never buy a machine from a redneck welder (I love redneck, by the way, 'cause I relate) because that's not always the proper way to fix things.Click image for larger version.

Now here's a question, is this normal wear on the cam or did someone fiddle with it?Click image for larger version.

Hey AMK, i’ve got one of those exessively worn cams too. Actually it almost looks like the far lobe on yours is almost gone. Did it run? The BIG question is how do the rockers look? Them guys are getting harder to find.
Did you find a kicker yet? Here’s a well worn cam to compare yours to Click image for larger version.

    That sounds like me

It looks like wear from lack of oil. Was it running when you got it? How does everything else look?

Edit......Shep beat me to it and his questions are good

ID:	249590 this is how far I've gotten so far. I have to do it at work so progress is slow on "government jobs".
knappyfeet, no it didn't run when I bought it. Some one used red goop on the head gasket and it did block a main oil passage.

This is truly a rags to riches project. I pulled the clutch cover off to see what was going on and the clutch and everything was gone. The crank had weld on it to hold whatever bolts to it and stripped threads. I have a bottom end on it's way but ill need whatever attaches to the crank and nuts. I've recieved a clutch complete but need a nut and washer for it also.

Like I said before this is a saga of epic proportions. But I'm in!

That's one heck of a project! Good luck with it and the Maier fenders fit and look great as well as new stickers if you decide to go the OEM route. Here's the Maier fenders on an '86 I had years back.

Thanks, I'll probably go with Maier for the rear. I do have oem for the front and I found oem shrouds as well.
It came with '84 rear, shrouds and front. The '84 rear was cut out to fit but the seat looks like a recovered '86.
Someone rolled and thrashed this one and fixed it on a laundromat budget.

Have you figured out what that swingarm is off of? Kinda looks like a yamaha warrior maybe? Make sure the chain (sprockets) line up front to back or you’ll have bigger issues later on. It looks like a fun project, just take your time it’ll come together.

The front forks and front wheel are from a 1984 200X as well. I am going to agree with that being a Yamaha swing arm. Could be from a Banshee, who knows. I would get rid of all of that and try to find something from a Honda. Yamaha never made a decent chain driven atv swing arm until 2006.

Having owned both generations I always felt the 86 was what future atc's would be like if Honda continued to produce them. It was a nice leap from the previous years in that it felt modern and I loved the motor and chassis. Such a shame so few are around.

You need the "oil filter rotor" and that crank is LH threads, so 99 out of a hundred people strip them.

Whatever your missing for the bottom end, pretty sure I have a few part motors...

The swinger matches a Blaster to the T. Someone welded 2 trailer hitches to it and they welded the hubs to the axle. I've got an OEM Honda that will be painted and put on.

I have a bottom end minus all of that on it's way but I will need the nuts, washers and oil filter rotor. Someone did strip the threads and welded the nut onto the crank. Judging by the busted case it must have flown apart at some point.
I will look through the manual when I get to that point and will certainly pm you with a list.
I'm going to focus on the top end. The piston and bore are good and within specs.
Timing chain needs inspected but the sprockets and tensioners are good.

The triples are still '86 and the rim has the rolled bead, can't remember if '84 or '85 did that or not.
I'm not sure on the forks, only the front is painted black. The back still has the clear coat over aluminium.
Yeah, that swinger is going on the scrap heap unless someone wants it.
