Picked up this 185S motor at a junkyard 3 weeks ago for $15. Cases are decent, doesent look like its been thrown around. But, it wouldnt turn over past a certain point. I bought it to tear down and learn the inside of a Honda ATC engine before I rebuild my good 200M engine. This is an experiment and I dont really care what happens to it, so great for learning on. Figured I would also make a post with a couple pics in case anyone wants to tear down a similar engine.
Camshaft looks really good.
Notice pieces of spring on the magnetic pickup.
No springs, wonder where they went......
AHHHHHHHH!! I think that is why its not turning.
I think the cylinder will be usable again on some other bike, but would very likely need to be bored out. At least thats my guess. There isnt much pitting though.
Hmm, yeah I dont think this motor will run again.......
So, if you are ever thinking about leaving a engine outside with out a spark plug....dont do it! It makes a mess. I can hear water sloshing in the bottom of this thing. lol Rod bearing is seized up, crank bearings have rust, dont want to turn very easily. And I had to beat on the piston with a piece of wood to get it to slide out.
I think the piston could be cleaned up with a wire wheel and used, and I think the head would be usable again too if gone through.
Thats as far as I got today, and I did learn some useful things regarding tearing these down, so I am happy. Its helps to follow a manual and its really a very straight forward and simple job. Hoping to eventually split the cases and tear this thing down to the last bolt. Will try to post pics as I go.
