Also found this thread... pretty sure he's a member here too. Read post #3. That means the info I had was specifically for 86 ATC250R and TRX250R only and not 85 ATC which is unique according to deathman

No problem. I'm just sorry you got bad info to begin with. I feel responsible for giving you that part number because I thought they were the same as well. I don't want you to get stuck with a set you can't use and I'm willing to buy it from you to make it right. I'll just have two sets.

I'll wait for someone who truly knows what's up to tell you whether or not using 86 Links would work.

So I dug on-line a bit. Here is what I've found:

The very front and very rear pivots and bolts look the same and the Honda parts diagrams show them all cross referencing each other.

The issue is in the middle, at the lower shock mount where everything comes together. Although the Honda parts diagrams list the dimension otherwise, the info from the other forum and the direct measurment of the Pivot Works kits seems to confirm the key difference: ATC250R uses an M12 lower shock bolt, and the TRX250R uses an M14. The Honda parts diagrams list the lower shock mount bolts on both applications as an M12 x 110. I think it is a typo on the TRX pages and it really is an M14 x 110. The pivot works bushing is definitely larger than it should be for an M12 bolt, and the exact dimensions from their website list the ID as 14.02 mm (confirmed by directly reading the part I had from the kit).

I made a table in excel summarizing the part numbers and information, but work won't let me upload the pictures. I'll upload tonight when I get home.

EDIT: Just read your post Ironchop: No worries!! I'm happy to at least have 1/2 the parts I need for the linkage. Your info wasn't bad at all because I was finding cross references to that kit for ATC's on other sites as well. Honestly, I think pivot works did a poor job with this kit as it is actually missing one of the bushings necessary to do the entire setup (missing one of the bushings for the rear dogbone).

yes, I have a bunch of 85 atc, 86 atc and 86 trx linkage parts. Not sure where they all are, though. 85 and 86 are the same length everything, but the bushings(bottom bolt) and bottom bolt is different, it is much smaller on a 85..... The linkage bushing stayed the same from 86-89 and the bolts, change was 87-89 had a shorter dogbone(also shorter shock and even shorter in 88/89).....but 87 had nearly the same swingarm as a 86(it has different skid plate mounts), that is why there is 85/86 atc/trx skid plate and 87-89 skid plate. The reason why many atc's and trx's have the 85 linkage is because when atc's where stopped, there were tons of 85 and 86 250r's, there were yards filled with just the back section of the frame w/ swingarm.......burguard atv had a enormous pile of them. As the the swingarms broke, many bought these from the atc's has they were very close or the same.......But they aren't, 85 and 86 look the same from the outside, but a closer look shows a different axle, brake carrier, brake hub, sprocket, sprocket bolts, rear shock and linkage setup. Many considered them a "dime-a-dozen" and didn't think of the difference as they saw them as "outlawed atc" parts and saw a huge pile of them, very little thought to see they are totally different. I got first hand info about this from a person who saw burguard's yard and spoke/bought parts from the people who worked there. Last time I talked to him, he was saying "I wish I kept a bunch of those nearly new atc plastics and especially the headlights, they were so cheap and easy to get, you couldn't give them away, now you will pay $1000+ for a mint un-used one".

So basically all he would need to do to use that Pivot Works Rebuild kit is to find and use the '86 model ATC or TRX linkage on his '85 swingarm?
