1985 big red rear end repair time

So I have my 1985 250es big red and I am getting a popping noise coming from the right rear wheel. I figure I need to do the axle bearing's. I'm not sure how to distinguish between the early or late 85 model. I also searched for some sort of write up on this job to no avail. My other question is how would one go about checking/testing the differential bearing's I don't want to go in for surgery and leave a problem for another day. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Most are the odd ball early size bearings .
I have a set and can measure the right hub inner size of the bearing .
Mid 85 and on uses a smaller hub and that’s were the difference is .

35mm is the size of the early model at the hub we’re it fits in the bearing
    28mm are mid 85 and on .

Is that something visible from the outside or is that after disassembling the hub and brake drum .I usually like to have parts in hand during the teardown if possible.

Just pull the hub and measure the hub we’re it rides the bearing .
Will save you 30.00 in parts if you order the wrong ones .
