    G'day from Australia! - 1981 YT125H

    Hi all!

New member here. I just picked up a 1981 Yamaha YT125H that I literally found on the side of the road, in a rubbish pile! I went and spoke to the owner who has a large collection of pre 1950s cars and bikes, and he "just didn't want the bloody thing in the way anymore!" He was happy to see it was going to a good home and helped my load it into my car.. How awesome!

It is a bit rough, but not too bad! It hasn't been running for at least 10 years is my guess. I am in the process of getting it all sorted out. I now have the engine running great, and am awaiting a heap of parts to arrive (mostly from the USA, to me here in Australia) via eBay.

I have everything ordered that I need to get it riding great, and looking awesome again. EXCEPT FOR THE PULL START MECHANISM THAT I AM MISSING!!! Does anyone have a complete pull start cover unit they wish to sell me? Let me know please!

Thanks for having me here. Pics are attached.

    Cheers, Pez

Hi Pez ,welcome to 3ww mate! great to see another aussie here, nice score you got there, hard to find these complete recoils now they seem to get snapped up pretty quick on ebay. There is a guy on gumtree at the moment selling yt125 parts but not sure if he has the pull starter.

    Thanks Carl!

It seems to be the only part I cannot find, anywhere. The guy on gumtree is not far from me. I have already been down that path and unfortunately, he is wrecking a bike that "had everything except the pull starter"!! No luck. (Also, very very high $$$ from him).

Just 3 quick questions for you if thats OK:

    - What is the performance difference like between the 125 and the 175? I see you have both!

    - What side is the front brake drum assembly on your 125H? Mine was on the RHS but something tells me it was originally on the LHS?

    - Do you have some photos of your 125 I can see? I am wanting to get the stickers correct for the year, and if yours is as per original? that would help.

    Cheers

    Hey Pez,
The 125 & 175 are similar in performance, engine wise, however the transmission is a bit different ,I have had both these trikes on the beach vs each other from stop start , when it got up to the higher gears the 175 pulled away easily, it also helps having the front suspension. They are still surprisingly quick for a smaller engine.
As far as I know the 81' 125h did not have a front brake - it is possible someone modified yours or it could be a later model -they came out later with front suspension & brakes. It would be on the left side normally.

The decals are mostly original, but I did get a couple of a guy on eBay in the US, this is pretty close to how they originally looked

Thanks Carl! That is awesome info - those pictures really help too!

Mine is definitely a 125h (81), but who knows if it is a later front wheel??. The forks look original, and the brake housing is "secured" to them with a hose clamp - this bit is obviously not original. I will look into this a bit more.

I am fairly jealous of your two YT's- they are in great shape.

My YT will park next to my Suzuki LT125 quadbike which I have had since I was a kid. Only the one 3 wheeled death machine here (so far)

    Cheers,

    Pez

    Hahaha.

Thanks mate. The problem is that real Australians don't drink Fosters. We don't throw "shrimps on the barbie" either!

But I do have Kangaroos in my back yard and hopping down my street, so the stereotype isn't totally wrong.

A whole heap of parts that I ordered via eBay USA arrived, so I got stuck into things today. Still need to find a complete pull start mechanism, and a new seat base (mine is rusty), but otherwise it is going well!
