I've owned two Toyotas in my life
1995 4runner which was weak, slow, and heavy....but reliable at least.
My 1978 FJ40 Landcruiser was the best 4x4 I've ever owned in my entire life for trails and general. It had 79K on it when it got it and I put another 80K miles on it. I only had to replace the clutch, the clutch slave cylinder, tires, and the water pump. Everything else was OEM except the exhaust header. It had a 4.2L I-6 in it and was 4:10 or 4:11 geared because it wouldn't do over about 65mph in 4th gear so it was not really a hwy driver though I drove it daily anyway. In 10" of fresh snow in the road and the frontend locked in, I could do 50mph and it was steady as a rock. That thing started without fail from -20F to 105F. It was better than my 78 CJ7 in just about every way as well except I recall the Jeep getting way better fuel mileage. The FJ was 10mpg average I think and it was THE SUCKIEST part of driving it.
