Tri z top mount fuel tank

Bored...so started mocking up a top mount tank... dropped off the templates. Waiting for some quotes. In the fab shop. They asked what gauge ali. They suggested 2mm. Should it be thicker. I was thinking 5mm. What would be best. 2 or 5mm. Couple of pics

Steel or aluminum? 5mm steel would be very heavy. The only advantages can think it would offer are less distortion when welding it and less chance of your front wheel coming up under acceleration.

    Great project btw :been
    It sucks to get old

Id want it thick...one roll and your done. Make it aluminum, powercoat to the color you need and go about your day. Your gonna pay but that rear gas tank was something i never liked on them.

2mm is only .080, that's pretty thin. 5 is gonna get ya closer to 1/4" thick. Heck man, IDK. That's a tough call. I'd want something fairly durable, you definitely don't want a beer can up there.

    2mm... That's what you want

5mm is going to be a heavy fuel tank

Another question for ya.... this gets welded up. Should I ask for baffles in side the tank. Not 100% sure yet what it will hold. But I think over a gallon an half ..Thanks ian

What are you going to do for the gas cap? It doesn't look threaded. What's the volume?
