1985 250es carb question

Hey everyone,
First post, I usually find answers to my question using search, but this one I couldn't find.

Im in the process of rebuilding my carb for the first time on my 85 250es. Now before I let it sit for a couple of years it ran and idled fine with no issues I can remember.

After watching a few videos and taking my carb apart. I found that im missing the "main nozzle". ( I believe that's what its called".

you can see it protruding when you open up the throttle and look through the carb, which on my carb you can just see the hole.

So my question is;
Is it ok to run without it?
and what exactly does it do?

Should I try and find one before I put this back together?

and does anyone know where I can find one.

I think you're talking about the main jet needle. If that's gone it will not run, so yes, you'll have to replace it. There are very few pieces you can leave out of a carburetor and still have it run.

the first hole is where the needle comes through #2.
im talking about #20 , you can see it protruding in the pic

That might be what your pilot jet goes into. Either way, you're going to need it.

I found a couple of OEM carbs on ebay and it looks like between the three I will have two complete carbs.
so next time I need to mess with it I can just replace and have no down time.
