Barn find 1985 200x bought today

Yesterday scrolling through Facebook marketplace i happen to see an ad titled “antique 3 wheelers” with a picture of a dirty 185s and 200x. After messaging the owner and setting up a time I managed to bring it home today. It looks to be all original down to the tires and everything is there except for the muffler. The engine is unfortunately stuck, but I plan to disassemble it anyway. I was told that it ran when put away whenever that was, and the crankcase was full of oil so I figured that’s a good sign. My plan is to make it a nice rider, probably take it down to the frame and clean it up and get the engine running. I’ll try to post some of the progress along the way.

I doubt that the original rear tires are worth very much. I hope I didn't disappoint you there.

Man a cracked sleeve, they are tough to come across but check ebay often, you may find one there. I snatched up several oem parts from their. If thats not fruitful you may check LA SLEEVE they have replacement bores, you could get a motor machine shop to install a new sleeve in the original head. They can finish bore it to 65mm, then you can go back to original bore.

Best I remember the normal cracked bores come from boring out the cylinder to 67mm or 2mm over stock, cylinder wall gets thin, and can't take it.

Good luck and if I can help, drop me a message. I am currently rebuilding my 1985 200x, only a few small details and it will be ready to ride. Its running good 1mm overbore, web racing cam, and a little help from the guys here chasing some gremlins down.

I had an 1983 185s, put a million miles on it, that brings back memories.

Someone else will chime in, but I think you might be able to use the 200S jug. I think you might be able to use an XR200 jug as well, but don't quote me.

    200x

I’ve made a little more progress getting it mostly down to the bare frame, I’ve yet to take the forks off. Everything came apart with little to no drama. I strongly believe this bike has never seen mud and that helped tremendously in disassembling it. My plan is to start the sandblasting parts and removing rust via vinegar. I’ve already done the tank on the inside and it impressed me as usual.

As for the cylinder I will be receiving one soon from shortline10 and I’ve also managed to find a complete Honda gasket kit for the engine. After doing 2 250r engines I’ve learned to stick with oem Honda gaskets If I want them to fit right. I will soon have the cylinder bored for a wiseco 10.25 Piston.
Upon closer inspection when I removed the piston I’ve found that the small end of the rod is damaged and will have to be replaced no doubt something I wasn’t wanting, but a necessity none the less. I plan to do this myself once I find out more about fixturing the crank as I have access to a machine shop and press at my work.

Cleaning up the cylinder head I noticed another problem that hopefully will not cause me to scrap the head as the cam journals look great and I realize that’s a common problem on these engines. I assume the cause was from detonation or something foreign in the engine. My concern is around the engine seat it looks to be eaten away. I believe milling the head would get rid of most of the places on the quench area, but I’m not sure how much it can be milled before causing timing chain issues or piston to valve clearance something I need to research. If anyone knows info is appreciated.

Ugh, that head is yuck! Looks like it ran really lean at some point but who really knows at this point. The guys news is that if you need to mill the head cometic can pretty much build you a gasket the thickness of your choosing. Hope that helps. Good luck with it!

What part of Kentucky are you in?

I live in Alvaton which is just south of Bowling Green

I may have an extra 200X head in the garage that's in better shape than that one but I'll have to look if you're interested.

Ironchop I live in olaton, im only about 40 miles from bowling green though. I actually purchased a head today off a guy on facebook, but if there’s a problem with it I’ll keep yours in mind.
