660 bronze is actually a bit tough and may work just fine.

The only thing that may come into play: Bronze bushings are meant to be squished when assembled. Then, you ream them to the I.D. spec for the cam.

So, the O.D. may have to be fiddled with to get the right specs you want.

That is most likely why they use a needle bearing, as once a bronze bushing is installed and "squished" You'll need a special reamer to get in there and open it up to the right size.

Yeah, a better photo would help because the slot in the screw doesn't look stripped to me.

Ok, it doesn't look terrible in the pics, but the screwdriver just wants to slip. Can't get the impact screwdriver to work either, just gonna booger it up more I think. Click image for larger version.

Oh, ok interesting. I'll have to ask the machinist about that. I would like @ 0.002" clearance, as spec is 0.003". Don't want to go too tight.

I am only doing this on the left (large) cam journal. Would you recommend using a solid round bushing, or half circle bearings? (Like rod bearing)

I know you seem have a lot of experience in machining so I would be interested to hear how you would address this issue.

Is your impact bit the correct size for the slot?

    Is your impact bit worn?

At the worst case, you can drill the head of the screw off but that may gouge the retaining plate up some. There also, won't be much of the screw exposed to grab, so that's another risk.

Yeah might have to get another bit and try it. Was thinking it shouldn't be in there that super tight so maybe a left-hand drill bit would work. If it heats enough and breaks loose the bit might turn it loose.

    Don't heat it.

If a good impact bit of the proper size slips out of the groove, which it shouldn't, then before drilling it you can try to get it to turn by hitting it on one edge of the slot with a fairly sharp chisel and fairly big .

Actually, what I meant is do not heat the screw. If you do any heating, stick the head in the oven at 300 degrees for maybe 10 minutes. If you have an infra red gun you can slide the oven tray out with the head on it and check the temp before removing it from the oven.

Well, here's part of the problem. Im not sure how to keep the cover solid and still whilst attacking the screw. Dont want to hit it too hard either, for fear of cracking it. Maybe a vice if I'm careful...I'll have to look at it again.

Got the stuff to install a bearing into the pulse generator cover. NSK 6802 ball bearing. 15x24x5 size. Bronze bushing stock will (hopefully) be turned into a spacer to fit bearing into cover bore. Bore is 25mm so a small spacer is needed.

Cleaning up the head, and I have the bronze stock for those bushings. Will drop that off when it's cleaned.

Did you get the screw out?

Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me. I carefully put the cover in a vice and was able to get it out by tapping the end of the slot with a punch to spin it. Almost drilled it out, but turns out that's all it needed. Thanks!

Most xlnt, and you are welcome. It's just one of those tricks I learned a long time ago, but it only has a chance of working if the screw isn't seized somehow.

Yes, it was just tight enough to make the screwdriver slip, but not seized thankfully. The oil pump screws on the other hand were totally seized. I totally stripped them. Cheap set of left hand drill bits and I had them out in no time. I won't used anything else to drill threaded stuff out anymore.
