    82 250r help

Hey there I read the thread about a few mods and things that could be done to an 82 250R. just needed some clarification and possible ideas on the following.

You wouldn't happen to have a plus 3 extended swing arm for an 82 250R would you? or know where I can get one. with that three inch extension do you have to get a different rear shock, or can you make the stock one work?
I just bought an 82 and want to upgrade it a little. I think I am gonna use those tusk extended wheel hubs I think they used to be the G-force extended hubs. Anyway, I had them on a wheeler a while back, that should give me the width I want. I think that thread showed 300ex or 400ex hub spines would fit the 82 axle? Probably through some fast trekker 18-11x8s on the rear. Not sure if I want to swap the front with the 200x or not yet.

I will probably take the top end and have it port and polished, bored if needed, and throw a 32mm pwk carb on it and some boyseen pro reeds . It already has the DG exhaust. I think I read somewhere that you can throw a 36 tooth rear sprocket and really get this thing to fly, probably needs some modification to make that work though. Other than that I need to replace the handle bars, seat cover, and some other cosmetics. If I get real froggy I will tear it a part and powder coat it. I'm not looking to break the bank, already did that back in 2011 with a TPC trike. Anyway, any advice or help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I am NOT a honda expert by any stretch of the imagination but some others here are.

Exactly what type of riding do you plan on doing?

It is very easy to "overbuild" an engine so it is very "pipey" which can make it difficult and unpleasant to ride. It is also very easy to "overcarburete" an engine with a carb that is too big.

One of the things I do know is these engines benefit from even in stock form is more compression, but unless you want to use race gas, you need to be careful how much you increase the compression.

There are also a couple aftermarket aluminum heads that were made for these that increase the compression and cooling ability but they are typically insanely expensive.

For aftermarket parts, you can look on ebay, call hreatv (they can make a swingarm), send a message to 3ww member atc007 (he hoards rare honda parts), look on ebay etc.

    http://hreatv.com/

Also, you can get a lot of info and sometimes parts for the air cooled 250r's from the site below. It is dedicated solely to that model, and many of the guys on it know absolutely everything there is to know about these and all the hop up mods etc. This being said, if you check it out, don't forget to come back here, as many people here would like to follow your build etc, plus there are many here with air cooled 250r's.

    .
Here is some info on fitment for a dg head on an air cooled 250r. It appears that some of the fins may need to be ground away for clearance if you use a first gen dg head on a 2nd gen 250r that has a dg pipe.

    .
Here's some more info. There is also a search engine on the 3ww site that you can use to try and get more info.

thanks Barnett! I was actually trying to get a hold of you through PM but your mailbox is full. Probably just some trail riding and playing around with MX. I'm pushing 50 So nothing too wild for my back anymore. I know that these can be ported and polished and with the right breathing and fuel can be little terrors. But I know how I like to ride and the way this sets stock makes me feel like I'm on an old 110. so I want to widen the stance a little and maybe put some inches on the swing arm. put some 18 fast trekkers on it, and I still haven't made my mind up about the front end yet. If I can squeeze enough out of the rest of the bike to make up for the oversized front end, I think it has an old school look to it. I already built a 20k ream machine once, not looking to do that again. just looking to have something to mess with between crappie fishing and hog riding.. and to be able to throw my leg over the seat and get that feeling of being 15 and invincible again!

The 82R can be made into a very fun scoot. It doesn't have much suspension travel, so it makes a great flat track machine or mx'er. That's how I have mine set up (see pic.). As far as mods go, it responds well to your standard changes, e.g., aftermarket pipe, bigger carb, etc. The DG head is also a great upgrade. It provides higher compression and looks super cool. You have to use higher octane gas, however. Mine takes 100 octane. A nice DG head can be an expensive upgrade, anywhere from $350 to $500. If you get one, be on the lookout for pitted domes. A lot of people ran them without the higher octane and they show signs of overheating and detonation damage. Another option is a YZ 250 head--I forget which years at the moment. It's a direct bolt-on I believe, although you can bump up the compression by milling the head. Some guys think they run better than the DG, plus you can get them much cheaper on ebay.

I have Tusk hubs on mine. They work great for now but eventually I'd like to get an extended axle from Durablue. Regarding the extended swinger, just keep your eye on ebay, here, and facebook sites. The Westcoast swinger I have is a +3 and has multiple mounting points for the shock. You may need a stiffer spring if you're heavier, but you can also change where you mount the lower shock to compensate. Works Performance (now Worxs Shocks) has also reopened and they make a rear shock for it. Have fun building it.

Very nice trike, I am going for the same exact look and fit. I will have to dig in on that YZ head year, these guys have lost their minds for $500 pitted DG ones...Thanks for the info!

    Chris,
what tusk hubs did you get. they don't let you choose te 82 Honda atc 250r for a choice, did you go with like 2004 300ex hubs? Just want to make sure I order the correct ones to fit the stock axle.

Yeah, they won't list the 82R. I ordered the 400EX hubs but they are probably the same as the 300EX (check the part numbers). The YZ 250 head was 1979, perhaps other years too. It has higher compression and better cooling than stock. Rob Selvy is a guru when in comes to the engine. He mills the head, groves it for an o-ring, etc. If you're on facebook, join the "Air cooled atc250r owners" group. There's a discussion of his mods on there. Someone said he is getting 52hp out of the R with good usable power. That's impressive if true.
