after being helped by this forum for years, finally registered!

Hey guys. After wanting a 250R since I started riding my first atc 70 back in around '94 . I finally bought a "worked but also beat" 250r with an esr 350 big bore kit. After getting it home and taking it up the road and back once. I didn't like the way it felt, so I parked it and tore it apart down to frame and a million pieces. Then started the rebuild to make something I'll probably only put on a shelf and look at, haha. A few years later I am still in the process of rebuilding, but getting close to finishing. Now that I am reaching the odds and ends. I figured it would be a good time to join the forum.

I'm sure this one won't be my last rebuild.

My bucket list of trikes I still need to get my hands on again includes trikes I had growing up.

    the "big red"
    the 70
    the 110

and one I have never even seen in person. But I feel i'll need to take a second mortgage out to afford when I find one locally for sale.

    The 86' Kawasaki Tecate 3.

Welcome!! from another member from PA.

Let's see some pics of the build as it sits.

What "odds and ends" do you need to finish it up?

Based on validated VINs though the Kawa site, there's about 3300 86 tecates. 87's exist but good luck finding one.

FYI, your old 84 "Big Red" should be a ATC200ES. Are you planning to buy that exact model again, or upgrading to the ATC250ES Big Red? The 250 is like completely redesigned, new engine, suspension all around, etc. The 200's are fun too, just my preference has been to the 250es/sx machines.

Good luck finishing up the build. Let us know if you run into any issues once it comes time to firing it up.

It's been a while since I've made any progress on it. I drive over the road for a living and spent most of spring and winter out in the mid west. so she's a bit dusty. Now that i slowed down for summer with the kids. I will hopefully be able to finish this thing up.

For odds and ends that i still need to locate. There are only a few odds and ends that I know for sure I need and they are: Radiators. Radiator supports, radiator guards, and a regulator for the wiring harness.

Here are some pictures of what the 250 looked like when I bought it. I'd like to think that she came a long way.

FYI, the 250R regulator had different connectors 85 vs 86. 85 was both males, the 86 is one male one female. Either make sure to get the right one for your harness, or I can make a small adapter if you don't mind running an adapter.

Thank you! I will look at what I have tomorrow. The guy who I bought this from had so much of the 250 rigged up with whatever he seen fit. I think there were more cr125 or cr250 parts on the trike, then original correct parts. Heck, he even used a cut in half socket as a crank spacer on an engine he spent thousands on from esr... wish i could find the picture. Well anyway. I bought a used harness a few years back. That was suppose to be for an 86. I'll double check for sure though. Do You know of any new regulators that will work? Or an I better off taking my chances on buying a used one?

I haven't heard of the OEM regulators really failing like at all, not much in them to fail, 4 diodes and a voltage regulator circuit, so I'd stick with OEM if you can find one for a reasonable price. For new ones, I'm looking for sources too, I want to make a DC kit for the 185/200 similar to the old school hondaline made ones. The big issue is most modern machines are 3 phase power, and these older machines are single phase.

If the harness is unmodified, 86 would have the 4+2 style CDI connector, which you'd need the matching CDI to use with it too. Besides the regulator and CDI connectors, the harness interchanges. I'd say the 86 with the 86 CDI would be the better option, that opens up options into the TRX250R CDI's and such, I think they are the same pin out, but I could double check if you wanted to be sure.

I got around to looking at the harness. It is an '86 as it has one male and one female connector for the regulator. The cdi has the 2 square style plugs rather than the one round plug on the '85's. I think as for electrical all I need to source yet is. The regulator, spark plug cap, and some sort of tail light.

I'd like to find a nice new set of over sized radiators, and quality hoses yet. I have the ones yet that were on it when I bought it. I just don't want to run them because they're pretty beat up.

Once I get all that squared away, I should be able to at least get it started.

The axle, rear wheels, tires, '86 brake caliper, and front fender grommets will be here next week. With any luck i'll have this thing running around the yard by July.

For the spark plug cap, 85-86 is out of production, but 84 is in production yet.

You could go for the stock 85-86 ATC350X spark plug cap if you wanted, probably a little closer to the orig shape and a bit cheaper.

Awesome, I was going to ask for your suggestion on what to use for a cap. I never got into anything electrical. So I wasn't sure if there were any technicalities when it came to plug caps. I just ordered that 350x cap from the link you sent, Thanks for that!

Not a problem, there's not too much special about them that I know of, just a standard resister cap from my understanding. I figured it would be better you getting a random Honda made one instead of a random ebay one that's likely from China.

Btw when you're looking for a regulator, you can go for 85 or 86, just to run the mis-matched regulator with the harness you'd need the adapters I make. You should see them if you're looking on ebay, I just listed them today.

I know ezmoney is gonna shoot me for this but save your money on the T3 and put it towards a long rod 250r without the big bore 350. If you rode it up and down the street with it lowered like that it should feel uneasy on pavement.

Mentioning it being lowered when i bought it made me think. I set it back up to be at stock ride height. Anyone know how much of the fork tube should stick above the top clamp on the triple tree? I have the fork tube sitting at about 3/4 inch to maybe an inch above the top clamp. It looks ok now. I haven't gotten the axle and swing arm yet to really see what it looks like.

That long rod.... Is that a long rod with factory bore?

Im anxious to see what this 350 feels like with the trike being set up to my weight and right ride height. I have the 114 dome in the head. The guy gave a pump gas dome with. I just can't find it.

I'd assume the 250r's are like the other 3 wheelers I've seen, stock front forks are flat with the top of the clamp, maybe 1/4in above at most unless I just never noticed it.
