EBR-1 site in Idaho
My wife and I just got back from a vacation in Montana and Idaho. We drove by the site of EBR-1 the first nuclear power plant, unfortunately time didn't allow for a stop at the museum beings we didn't even know this place exsited. Any way INL is also within that same area, I quoted a introduction to the facility below. Anyway some pretty top secret high tech stuff going on there. None the less it was pretty Erie driving through the area.
THE NATION’S NUCLEAR ENERGY LABORATORY
GENERAL INFORMATION
WELCOME TO THE LAB

Mark Peters, Director, INL
On behalf of our outstanding staff, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Idaho National Laboratory.
"At INL every day, some of the nation’s finest minds conduct vital research that allows us to sustain and develop nuclear energy technologies, scale other clean energy technologies, protect critical infrastructure, support national defense and homeland security, bolster cyber security, and make sure nuclear materials do not fall into the wrong hands."
Advanced Test Reactor Complex lies within INL’s 890 square-mile area in a remote part of the Idaho desert. The complex is 47 miles west of Idaho Falls.
The complex includes several other advanced nuclear energy capabilities including: the Advanced Test Reactor-Critical Facility; Test Train Assembly Facility; Hot Cell Facility; Radiation Measurements Laboratory; Radiochemistry Laboratory; and the Safety and Tritium Applied Research Facility.
ENHANCING NATIONAL SECURITY
NATIONAL & HOMELAND SECURITY
Threats posed by global terrorism, the proliferation of nuclear materials, and the vulnerability of U.S. critical infrastructure have continued to evolve in complexity.
INL’s isolated site, test bed infrastructure, and applied-science focus make it a major center for national security technology development and demonstration.
INL’s National & Homeland Security programs protect nuclear material from proliferation, advance the nation’s war fighters, address secure communications channels for first responders and improve the security and resilience of critical infrastructure.
