The first thing to do would be changes to the intake and exhaust for better flow. Anything else without doing this will never see the full potential of the power parts.

I run a 10.25 high compression piston in all my 350x's. I don't think it raises the HP much but it does have a noticeable increase in torque and they just run better. On a 4 stroke the HP gains are in the head, and costs a lot of money.

Wouldn't increasing torque have a byproduct of making more HP because more work can be done at the same rpm? I think I get what you're saying though, it doesn't rev faster with the higher compression piston vs stock right?
Ya, it's kinda a chicken or the egg thing. If you make more torque, you can change gearing to make it go faster. So yes they are related. It also allows you to go with bigger valves and cams because they will actually lower the compression and lose velocity of the intake causing the torque to drop back down a bit but allowing more fuel in to make more power. It's a vicious cycle.
