ATC 250ES starter / flywheel question with video

    Hello,
Is this normal for this gear to move back and forth like this? Even when tightened it it still moves like that. The thrust washer and needle bearing are in place. Although the needle bearing kind of wiggles around on the crank shft.
Im trying to track this mysterious rattle. Thanks

Have you checked out the service manual? I used the 250sx one since it's easier to navigate (it has shortcuts to sections)

Do you have all the parts in this image?

I'm not sure where the normal wear would be on the starter gear, but does the face of the gear look the same as this (bottom section)?

Does the one way bearing function correctly (aka can spin one direction but not the other)?

From memory, I seem to recall the gear was nice and snug with nearly no play but I rarely get to work on a 250es/sx lol. Either case it seems like yours has excessive play for some reason, missing part, something worn, etc. If all parts are accounted for, check the crankcase for wear, maybe someone ran the engine with out the thrust washer for a long time and the case wore wider than it normally is.

If you need the crankcase housings, I have a pair, pretty sure it was from an 85 engine. If I remember right the top end was wasted on it (welded exhaust to studs, or broken off exhaust studs or something like that).

    It sure looks excessive.

Do the starter gears make full contact across the width of the teeth??

Yes they do. Everything is in place correctly according to the manual.
