85 350X Carrier Sliding On Axle

I picked this up yesterday for a grand, motor runs great. The swingarm carrier slides side to side on the axle. The rear brakes are gone, but with the bracket there I figured it doesn’t matter. I’m hoping it’s just missing the clip on the inside, but It’ll be several days before I have time to break it down. Nonetheless, another toy!

you axle lock nut is loose or all out of adjustment. The carrier is worn from lack of maintince. A new carrier and a better lock nut off ebay will fit it. Plus add a new rotor on it and get some brakes. I have a atc250R low profile caliper set up and new dual row carrier laying around if interested.

How can you tell the carrier is worn? I believe it’s a durablue carrier

I see gaps. It do t matter what type it is new ones are $40 on Ebay. You need to tighten everything. I had a 92 trx250x that they left the axle nut loose so it kept chewing into the carrier and rotor hub. Nothing g was really left and had nearly 3/4" side yo side play. Oem honda lock nuts are junk, a posi lock will go miles...just tape it up with electrical tape to keep the junk out of it then. Cant help you anymore unless you dig into your toy.

First off, nice score. It looks to be in pretty decent shape except for that rear end. Can you say neglected? What's wrong with it can't be diagnosed from just the pics. A tear down is necessary to confirm what all is wrong there. Depending on how much it was ridden, with it loose, will determine how much damage was done. Axles can come loose from time to time, and you can limp back home on it without doing damage, but if it was ridden like that for quite a while, most likely you'll find damaged bearings, axle, and or carrier. Only a complete tear down will tell for sure though.

I took tomorrow off work, I’ll pull it down and post pics. I’ll need all the help I can get identifying what’s what, and what my options are to fix. Thanks for the help

What part of the carrier is a wear point? The bearings were snug. I did notice fresh grease on the inside, mixed with old grease. Almost like someone pulled the axle, put new grease in it and put it back together without getting the axle nut right.

It that's gine it's your lock nut. You might just have a 300ex axle in there and there may need to be a spacer made between the rotor hub and axle nut. I've found alot of times form lock nuts just turn to crap.

Lock nut may be wasted if your carrier is fine. You need to check sprocket hub or rotor hub to see if worn down. When I reply via a cell phone words get very messed up for some reason. The sprocket hub looks nothing like factory 350X to me atleast.

Alright guys, I’m figuring a few things out...

    Recap:
Bought the bike with no known history behind it. The carrier slid on the axle approx 0.250-0.375. It seemed as if the sprocket hub location was good, but the brake rotor hub was not in far enough.
It has a Dura Blue axle, and what appears to be a $50 carrier off eBay.

    Findings:
1.) The brake hub stops on the splines (I believe) prematurely. The first pic shows where it stops, and the second picture shows a ring indention of it stopping due to the axle diameter increasing.

2.) The next pictures are the inside of brake hub, it has no mushrooming on the end to keep it from sliding further.

3.) I’m assuming that either the axle is wrong, or the carrier isn’t wide enough. I’m leaning more toward the axle is wrong, which is the reason the brakes were removed. If the brake hub isn’t sliding the full distance inward, then you wouldn’t be able to mount the caliber. Adding a spacer between the carrier bearing and brake hub wouldn’t help the brake mounting issue. The only option I see is to machine the inside diameter To allow it to continue sliding down the axle. I’ve read about the 300ex axles working but uncertain what mod is actually needed to pull it all together.

    Thoughts?

rotor hub is done for. thats a throw away part. time for a new one or convert over to 300ex / trx250r which i have on a 350x/300ex axle

the 300ex axle is only for 86 carriers which is the same part as a 250x/300ex. to run the 250x/300ex axle you always needed some spares made which is prob why your having issues. 1st step is pic what rotor hub you want to use and go from there.
