Building an 86' tri-z from scratch
I've been picking up 86' tri-z specific parts for the last few years. I started picking up the parts to upgrade my 85.5 Z and by the time I had complete 86' suspension and a 6spd tranny, I decided to build an 86' Z instead. I read anything I could find about 85' to 86' changes, and looked over all the yamaha studio photos/brochures that I could find. Basically trying to see if I'm missing or overlooking anything.
Here is a list of all the 86' specific Z parts that I have.
-frame
-forks/triples
-swingarm/link
-overflow bottle/mount/strap
-complete 1RX engine
-intake tube
-cdi box/wire harness/regulator
-front fender/headlight, rad. shrouds/airbox cover
-radiator grills
-like new dunlop kt732 front tire on a gold 85' rim
I'm going for a mostly correct, day 2 type build. It will have banshee rear hubs w/9in. rims(annodized gold), omf skids, klemm exhaust, likely a carb upgrade and works rear shock. I have a line on rear fenders, and the throttle assembly will depend on the the carb I choose to run. I figure the rest of the machine can be from either an 85' or 86'.
Since so many people break these machines down and part them out, I figured I'd put one back together. So far the parts that I have for it are from 13 machines and counting. If you know any 86' specific items I'm missing, any help would be appreciated.
Thankyou.

From what I can remember, here are the differences between the 85 and 86: front forks, front tire, transmission, coolant overflow, air intake, rear swingarm and linkage, and rear rims and tires. The 86 is definitely a more refined machine than the 85. I have a red/white 86 (pic below). Someday I might get a yellow/black 85 because I love the color too.

Okay. So I took a huge shortcut on this build. I sold a 98' yamaha grizzly 600 that I just finished rebuilding and bought this 3 days later. It came with nice stock rear rims and at least 50% tread stock rear tires(saving for future resto). It looks way nicer in the shop than the grizz ever did, and it takes up less space.
