Avoid a half link if you can. They are physically the weakest type of link you could use. The rest of the chain has straight, flat plates for links. A half link plate has a bend in it.
Sometimes, they are the only option, but they are never the best option. I'm a Yamaha BW200 owner; I know.
Don't think this only applies to motor vehicles either, there are actually half link chains available for bicycles. Literally, an entire chain made from half links. I don't know and don't care why, but they exist.
