    Valve Spring Collet (Retainer) Question

    So I just ordered two new valve spring collets for my ALT185 engine rebuild. They are a genuine Suzuki part.the new collets that I received have the raised lump halfway down the collet, where as the old ones have it up the top. I will attach some pictures here so you guys can see what I am on about.

    With the new ones more of the valve that the tappet contacts is exposed hence the springs are under slightly more tension. Not sure if this will affect anything but was just more curious more than anything.

    I’ve run into this problem a few times , basically they probably have the same part numbers but are definitely the wrong part .
    If you use the new retainers you might have the following problems , tappet cover clearance , springs running out of room when compressed by the camshaft .

    There seems to be some scoring on the cam bearing surface too.

    Thanks for the replies. Lucky I have a parts motor here that I was able to borrow the retainers from. The head pictured (silver dirty one) is the parts one. Yes it has a tad of wear, it is 36 years old.. but I wouldn’t hesitate to use it, not that I am, the photo makes it look worse.

    Will have to get back onto the dealer and get the right ones to put back in the parts motor.
