^I haven't put a kit in it yet. That's the next step after I work with Fabio's suggestions and make sure all the passageways are clean again.

Update - I received the Shindy kit and it came with a screw in pilot jet even though I ordered it for a 1980 model. Since I had a stripped down carb body in that configuration I installed it in there and put the original carb with the press in pilot jet off to the side. The trike started up nicely and idled with no smoke and has good throttle response. I took it up the alley and it died going into 3rd gear. I'm thinking the float is sticking a bit now. I'm really hoping that's the issue and not a weak CDI.

Sure enough, when I checked the bowl it was empty. I pulled the carb and worked on the float mechanism a bit and now it works great. I was experiencing some lean conditions under throttle so I went down one clip on the needle and it cured that problem. I'll do one more cold start tonight, replace a tail light bulb and I can safely say it's ready for the kid to use his grandpas machine.
A big "Thank you" to all that chimed in on here and for those that I was in conversation with off line

Well I'm back. This thing is going to be the death of me. So after countless carb cleans, adjustments, new components it's started to backfire through the carb when in mid range under load. I swapped out the CDI, plug and coil with known working ones and checked the pulse generator which is squeaky clean. I want to adjust the valves now and maybe the cam chain. I've also been instructed to look into the ignition stator which is on the list. I suspect this issue is what caused it to be parked in the first place. Unfortunately the old gentlemen isn't with us anymore to confirm so it's a guessing game. The sad part is I'm so consumed with this rig my old jeep is suffering with it's refurbishment.

Have you tried using a known good clean tank? I've had dirty metal tanks fool me a couple of times. Doesn't take much loose floating schmutz to plug the tank outlet.

    Update, it's done finally!
Weirdly enough, I cured the ignition breaking down by putting a used old school Champion plug in it with no resistor built in.....I know, it seems too simple and weird, eh? I don't care, it works and that's all that matters. This things flies now and has to be one of the fastest utilities I've ever rode. The owners are very happy with the end result. They said they clocked it at 55mph which seems a bit of a stretch to me....IDK?
Lesson learned for me...nothing is out of reach when trying to cure problems...think outside the box and do the simple things first no matter how whacky they seem.

Update. Can you believe it...after busting my azz to get this thing going for the guy, he turns around and sells it. And to boot he got $1900 CAD which is nuts as the new owner didn't even start up! And I ate numerous hours in labor and donated a ton of parts which I never got compensated for. Note to self, tell anyone who wants me to fix their trike to piss off from hereon. People!

I feel your pain, donating time is fun to fix things up but if the person getting something fixed for free, they should offer you a few bucks or a steak dinner when the flip is done. it's like someone wanting discounted hotrod parts for a car their going to flip. If its someone's weekend toy, ill give parts or discount parts to help out, if it's something getting fixed to flip, pay up asking price or go buy it new. jim

I'm with you on this one. I mostly have people who want me to work on their quads. I could easily start my own business if I wanted to, but I enjoy working on them and do not want to do this for a living. What I get is people who say "since you have it, why don't you do this too? Well now can you do this too?" Or else it's people who just expect me to work on them. They seem to think "I can buy this total POS and he'll work on it for next to nothing". I'm at the point where I refuse to work on other people's stuff now. I tell them that I'll help them work on their stuff (as in tell them what to do next) and that solves the problem.
