Gearshift spindle

I’ve looked for hours on here and the manual. It’s my first time messing with the gearshift spindle. ‘83 250r the foot pedal and the actual spindle are both pretty stripped out. I’m looking to replace them. Does the clutch basket have to come out to get the spindle out? The manual just says to remove the spindle. I’m not needing to do anything to the clutch. I have 2 weeks till I get back home to work on it. Hopefully I can get the parts by then

I haven't worked on a 250R before, but the one on my 350X just came right out of the left side.
