    Atc500r

    Sent my atc200x engine out to get built so I decided I wanted to make some progress on my cr500r to atc500r project that I had been pushing off. Don't plan to finish it asap as I prefer to take my time with bigger projects and not get frustrated to the point where I don't want to work on it at all haha. I've never really messed with 2strokes before and I've never owned a dirtbike before. Hoping someone could point out anything that should be upgraded in the engine or trans? Will be ordering a hinson clutch setup. It's a 1987 and I'm using the factory dirtbike frame for the trike conversion. From my understanding, an '85/'86 atc250r front suspension will bolt right up to the cr frame but don't want to drop the cash if that's bad Intel. And as far as the subframe what is everyone doing to use the atc rear fenders? Sorry for all the questions but I don't like doing things twice. I'll attach a few pics of my junk and my hope for the end result to some extent (no clue who owns the clean trike but I definitely appreciate everything!

    Probably want to post this in the trike section for best replies.

    Going to go out on a limb and say that you’ll probably be told to use an ATC frame for an arms length of reasons.

    Nice project

    Don't do it. Just buy a liquid cooled 250r and slap a big bore kit in it. All the 500 owners I know have sold them after building them.

    It's happening one way or another. A decent 85/86 atc250r is $5,000. I could convert this whole bike for less. Plus, I got an absolute steal on the 500.

    If you think you can do a successful conversion for less than you can buy a ready-to-ride 250R, you're going to be in for a shock.


    Why do you think you got a 'steal' on the bike to start with?



    Other than all that, the overwhelming majority of sane people will NEVER ride and ATC500R to it's full potential. That requires young riders who've not come close to death, or riders on hard drugs. Crusty Demons of Dirt would've put something like a ATC500R to the test, but those days are long gone.


    Riding wheelies in a smooth field versus jumping over a house are two separate worlds. Anyone that can hang the throttle open on a CR500R for long distances has balls that are almost illegal nowadays. If they worked in porn, their balls would come with a drowning advisory.

    If you have nothing helpful to share, why even comment? I'm looking for part compatibility, not to be told I'm not capable of handling a machine.

    Haha, nobody can handle the legendary 500 apparently which isn't even crazy by today's standards.

    This is the nicest 500 conversion I have seen so far. It looks like the pictures are gone now, but still lots of information including the answer to your front end question. You will need to build a custom subframe or modify the 500 frame to fit a quad subframe. The rake in the cr500 also needs to be adjusted otherwise it will be a chopper. Take a look at some of BVC Trikes conversions on youtube, that should give you a good idea of what is involved.

    Listen to the sage advice on this thread. If you attempt to modify the bike correctly, you will have well over 5k in parts and fabrication labor trying to convert that mess. If you look long enough you can find a lower priced 250r/350x that needs mechanical work and spend less money to get higher quality product.
