'83 ATC 185s rear axle snap ring

I'm in the process restoring a 185s to something similar to what I had as a kid, basically stripped down, front fenders, chain case, mud flaps gone. But I ran into a situation with the rear axle/sprocket. To get the rear sprocket off I needed to remove a huge snap ring. I destroyed it in the process. My question is do I need to use it?

On my '82 I had as a kid the sprocket had an internal damping system. When you changed to a conventional sprocket you did away with the dampers. On the '83 there are 4 bolts mounted in rubber, I'm afraid that without the snap ring the rubber holding the sprocket with flex and throw it out of alignment during acceleration.
