Normally I do 10:1...8:1...something like that. I've done 5:1 before with no problems. I know others who go more concentrated....even 1:1. I've found time in a warm bath to be more important than the concentration amount. Sometimes 5-10 minutes...other times an hour or more on simmer. Also you may go more concentrated if your boiling many items at the same time

One thing to look out for is newer rubber. Sometimes it swells beyond being usable or contorts. You may think it's rubber but it's not ......or it's a combination of different substances to emulate rubber. This you usually find out the hard way. Older items are usually rubber and it's safe to work on however for this reason I always do a quicker boiling to see if I'm going to run into problems......before I go on. I've screwed up enough stuff and learned the hard way.

It usually dosent take a long time in the boiling pot to know if your going to run into problems.

    Edit....also the cream I use pure...no diluting.

    Hello again!
I have another question for ya. I've decided to do some plating and was wondering if you are doing more than one part at a time? Any tips you can offer would be much appreciated! Thanks again.

    Good morning.

It depends but usually one at a time. With Caswell...since there's no cleaning to do after plating, it's easier to plate multiple items. With Eastwood...since I usually plate the same item at least 2 times I will clean one item while the other is plating....just makes it easier.

Also....if you plate multiple items at the same time....a small aquarium pump (adjustable) would be nice. Just a small amount of air...not like it's boiling.

What system are you working with?

    Good morning!

I'm making my system out of a phone charger, zinc anodes, vinegar and salt. I wanted to keep it simple first while experimenting after watching some video. I'm not even sure with this setup, I'll be able to do more than one at a time. Seems pretty straightforward and I'm hoping to do my first part this weekend (rear brake spring).

Funny how much stuff you can learn from other peoples videos! I have the brake spring soaking in household vinegar and a table spoon of salt. It had some black and red overspray on it, and its been soaking 2 days. Well, I looked at it last night and the paint is just peeling right off! Supposedly vinegar loosens rust also, so the spring should look decent before I plate it.

I also figured I could swish the solution around as things are plating to get a more uniform coating. But, I did see a video using the small aerator pump, so thanks for that info.

    Real cool.

I've also seen videos of folks using regular household items....some pretty nice results.

Keep us posted. I'd love to see how your setup works.

Edit.....it is real cool watching videos of stuff people share. I appreciate the time they take to make them and the sharing of knowledge and experience it gives. There's pretty much a video out there of anything you can think of.

    Hello again,

I finished my first part! I kept it in solution 45 minutes and it came out solid gray. It looked to have good coverage overall and I rotated it once during plating. I brightened it up using a wire wheel on my Dremel tool. What do you think?

I'm wondering if I should purchase some brightener for my solution? Or do you have a better way of polishing?

    Thanks for the inspiration!

    That came out nice.

I use this for taking the gray dullness out...... but you seem to be on the right track.....good job!

With dust all over it, it's showing signs of neglect.

I decided to install the rear shock. Also going to get ready to paint a couple of items. Had no time to do anything to it much this summer so far but..... just getting a couple of things done makes me feel this project is still alive.

Look'n good! Noone can understand how much effort a restoration takes until they do one personally. I am just trying to sort out a 350X to be a good rider and it is taking forever.
I should do a "build" thread on here at some point.

    Thank you guys.

Amen Footy...... especially if you are trying to do it right AND being penny pinching.

It's coming up on 2 years now and I still don't have a roller. I did for awhile...then didn't. So now the focus will be to get a roller again. I painted a couple of things but I want to start to work on the forks. So I think the plan will be to replace the seals and o rings and maybe the Schrader valve and then new atf. I want to add new springs but I got to thinking......I'm not really doing anything to the old, tired rear suspension.... let me just clean and button up the tired front suspension and call it a day.

Well I wasted $36 on this. I could have used that money on more pertinent things but I had to have it. Plus it covers up that corrosion.

    $1457 + $36 = $1493.

The next bolt or washer or anything I need to buy will put this over my $1500 budget.

Again.....I don't know when I went from "just going to clean things up and get it running".... to buying repop Honda badges but I seem to now be on the cosmetic road.

About 2 years since I started this rescue and my motivation feels like it's on "life support".

Nothing has really been done to it other than being neglected outside for 15 years it's now being neglected indoors for the last 2. I did install the tail light awhile back so I guess something got done. Some stuff has started to "re rust" but it looks like all the plated tidbits are not.

It's going to rain here next week so hopefully I can get a couple of things done to it...just to make me feel better.

The forks haven't been touched but maybe I can get to them next week.

It's pretty easy for that to happen, with everything else people have going on that takes them away from less important projects.

It's also not unheard of for a simple project to blow up into a full rebuild. No doubt several on here are going through the same thing. Many of us can't leave it good enough and that's when the madness starts.

You're still moving forward and once the trike's done, it'll all be worth it.

This sums it up perfectly.....spot on King.

I'm just glad I'm loosing motivation now when most of the components have already been gone through/painted/rebuilt and ready to be installed. I would have parted this out long ago if all I had at this point was a box of rusty, gunky, broken crap.
