No it doesn’t work , it might last a week before it starts slipping again .
The correct fix is a set of new gears and a heavy duty spring . The spring is what holds the gears together tight and stops them from slipping .

The original spring part number was

Better buy it asap , it’s an extremely hard to find obsolete part .

Update, when i went to pick up the 28253-965-00 spring it was the wrong #. So i ordered a xl200/xr200 spring. It is a little longer and the wire is bigger around, so stronger than stock, perfect fit. Then i back cut the gears using a air cut off tool with a thin cut off blade. I've probably started it at least 50 times getting the carb, clutch, timing adjusted over 3 weeks and still going strong. Has not slipped one time. I guess time will tell how long it will last. Take your time and don't over heat the gears when cutting them.
I had a guy on here backcut a set for me. It seemed to work. A heavy spring and extra shim washer was added. I however had to sell the machine so I am not sure if it ever really lasted. However where I work now we can cut gears, maybe its something worth making new of again now. I do not have any gear left so I'd need samples to re-engineer
I have a couple sets of gears and springs for the 83 and the 84/85, but the 84/85 may be spoken for with another member.
I rarely find these anymore but got lucky last year and found a few by messaging every Ebay seller in existence, pays off...
