Why did you replace the carb? And with what did you replace it? It is always best to just rebuild the OEM carb.
This is my first ATC. My grandpa bought it new in 1985. He passed away last year so I’m trying to restore it somewhat. It would start, but throttle would kill it every time. I replaced and carb and spark plug and now when I try to start it, it backfires and won’t start up. Any advice on solving this would be appreciated!

Hopefully you kept the original carb to rebuild or have a shop rebuild for you. The chinese carbs are usually nothing but trouble.
Replacement Amazon carbs do not work well on these machines, I would suggest rebuilding the carb or finding a shop that can rebuild it for you .... these guys do a pretty good job: www.223cycles.net
