I am new to doing these kinds of things and I am putting together a 1983 250r, are there any other engines that would bolt directly in or does it have to be a 250r motor? Any advice (about anything) would definitely help! TIA

As for bolt in engines, 1981-1984 atc250r will. The hard part about finding engine to swap is that the air coolers have the chain on the right side of the engine.

flip the axle.
There is an issue with the fitment of the shifter when switch between gen 1 & 2 engine/frame. I think one of the shift shaft is longer on one than the other.
Put your butt on the inside fender or end up on the ground!

This is true, I completely forgot about it. Been a while since I’ve been around the air cooled 250rs.
I’ve also seen guys that have used the cr250 engines that are air cooled, but IIRC the exhaust port is not going to line up (maybe it was intake side?), as well as the kickstarter will go the wrong way for a trike.

you will want to find an 81-84 R engine 81-82 same shift shaft and shifter, 83-84 same shift shaft and shifter. 81-82 red, 83-84 black. 83-84 shifters are expensive and hard to find perfect. Do you have any of the oem engine?
Rebuilding and riding trikes everyday and lovin every minute.
