Anybody seen a 250R VIN like this before?

Hello all. First off, I posted this in another thread not knowing I could not attach pics. I apologize for my rookie mistake.

I am stumped on this VIN. The frame has not been spliced with an SL250 head tube in my opinion, but stranger things have definately happened. Any input is appreciated. I believe it is an '81?

It’s definitely an 81-82 250r frame, but the vin for those is JH3TB060*BC000020 and up. At least that is what I could find.

I found a vin from an actual SL250, and it is SL250SE3005228. So possibly some kind of homebrewed unit? I would like to optimistic an say factory prototype frame, but in most instances prototype units of any sort don’t have a vin number. But it’s a cool thought!

Thanks for replys. Strange isn't it? This trike is actually a parts donor for my other and I don't have room to keep the frame but not about to get rid of it until I figure out what the story is.

As much as I hate to say it, try some of the FB groups, there is more traffic there. There is lots of very trike specific knowledge here, but not a lot of activity anymore.

It was probably stolen years ago and the "new owner" re-stamped it with a known good VIN he had.

    OR

Maybe it was born a SL 250 bike but at 5yrs old it's parents decided they wanted a 250R ATC 3-wheeler and the "trans" formation began....a cut/snip here and there....
And 35+ yrs later NO-ONE knows what the hell it is....

I wouldn't want to try and register it and get caught with it though.

I have looked really well for any type of frame repair, or repaint and can't see anything. At any rate I know where I got it and have bill of sale so somebody else can deal with it at that point. I do have the engine, as well as, an extra bottom end that came with the deal. I will check those out of curiosity. thanks

    Yea that looks totally "re-stamped"

Someone probably thought it was the easiest way to a street legal trike.

Looks like the 6 was stamped over an existing scratch.

I am not buying into a restamp, splice, or repair. Original paint, not one thing different from any other 81/82, head tube nothing close to an SL model. I sanded paint to get a better look and its super clean. Must be some logical explanation. One thing that keeps jumping out at me is 81 is first year. Maybe 250R was called SL250 in some other country?

I was going to say to sand the paint of and check. But sounds like you already have. As for the 81 model year, 1981 was the first year that all VIN numbers had to be 17 digits, that vin is from something pre 1981.

Well I did find this interesting bit of info. https://4-stroke.net/honda-vin-to-ye...-number-databa

go down to 250R...right under it is atc250(k1), the vin is XL250 etc. but the engine serial number is SL250E. Of course this makes no scense and leaves more questions than answers but it is something.

Ok, here are some additional facts.

Honda never used a 10 digit serial number.

If it was a prototype it would typically either have no vin, but it would never have a number like that.
