    $250 KX250 1986 parts swap with Tecate?

    Well I bought this 1986 KX250 for a wopping $250!

But the owner did not seem to know much about 2 strokes. He said it ran 1 week ago when trying to sell it. He said he started it and shut it off right away. Then 15 minutes later it would not start again. He said he never even rode it but here is what the ad said:

    "NEW ITEMS:
plastics (front/rear fender, radiator shrouds, & rear side panels)
    grips
    front brake pads
    carburetor
    topend gaskets
    piston, wrist pin

Just finished with topend winter rebuild.
I sent the motor to Magic Racing where they bored the cylinder to specifications and installed a new piston with new gaskets. "

Said he plays softball with guys from 'MAgic. A he had a bunch of 4 stroke toys.

I don't think there was any oil in the gas! The motor is not seized and I removed the pipe thinking it might be fluid locked. Piston looks new and clean.

The intake boot is rotted of course. The rear shock is blown. The filter had no oil on it, but it wasn't real dirty. Clutch basket does not look grooved. The gas tank has been painted a couple times. The silencer is wierd with some kinda spring loaded flap device inside it.

I have an 86 Tecate shock and an 84 KX250 shock. Does anyone know if these will work on the 86 KX250?

Will a staight intake boot from an 84 KX250/Tecate work on the 86 KX250? Looks like it will.

Should I convert the bike into a Trike? Do the 86 Tecate swingarm and triple trees bolt right on and line up?

Anyway I am working on getting it started now so wish me luck.

Shoot man, put the KX motor in your TEcate and sell off the rest. Bet you could get a decent buck for your stock t3 motor.

Maybe the flywheel key sheered off? Intake boots will swap.

    Yep Craigs list.

The flywheel key is fine (i hope). It has spark. I got it to go poof twice.

Took off the carb and boot. The reeds are new. The boot is not cracked all the way through. I have another boot. Thanks for the info BG.

There is a lot of gas sloshing around and bubbling in the crank case. I still believe it is fluid locked. Gas was dripping from the pipe. The pipe is missing the copper gasket. But that shouldn't matter for just trying to start it? When I took the pipe off earlier there was no gas in it.

So do I have to tip the bike over to get the gas out of the crankcase? Any suggestions there? I don't think it will evaporate any time soon.

The cylinder wall looked good but with some light scratches. Compression is good.

    Anybody recognize that silencer?

That's a nice bike for $250. If it were me, I would try to fix the bike too. I hardly ever get deals like that. But I'm gona go look at a us90 soon and he said $75.00 but that's another story. Nice score!

Thanks. I am trying to fix the bike and plan to ride it for a while.

I have too many toys now and I think the 84 Tecate has to go.

You can remove the plug, roll it with you on it and drop it in second to get the piston going to pump/blow out the gas.

Yeah I did this once before and just pulled the plug and kicked it over a lot. I wish I had an electric start like my friend's snowmobile that was fluid locked.

Well I put the pre-jetted Keihin PWK on it. A POD filter. A minnow net to hold the POD from hitting the shock. A shock from an 84 KX250. New chain and sprockets. Stuck a spark arrestor screen in the silencer. Lots of comprssion and runs great.

The throttle cable sucks and the forks and shock seems soft, but it's still fun for about a $375 investment.

The rear shock from the 84 or 86 tecate is not the same as the KX250. The dog bones are different too. The ones on the trikes are shorter.

I lowered the seat height with the dog bone as much as I could considering the dog bone would only tighten on one side.

Can I lower the seat more by compressing the shock spring more? If so, I don't have any spanner wrenches for the shock but can I use vise grips or something to compress the spring in order to tighten it?

Why would you want it any lower? You appear in photos to be of average height... Remember lowering the sag alters the rake of the forks... and makes a huge difference in handling... you can lower the forks in the tripple clamps some to correct it... To adjust the preload spring without a spanner... I usually break the top one loose with a and a punch... then I use some channel locks to adjust the nut...usually works for me...

The swingarm and tripples with bolt right on it... But there will be very little ground clearance, way too much rake, and even with a custom subframe the seat will still be way too high... I mocked all this up on a '85 KX250 frame I had... IMO it would only be worthwhile as a drag machine... and in that case a KX500 would be a better choice...

Put that motor in your 86 Tecate. It should bolt right up and be a great improvement in power.

Lowering the forks a little.....good idea.

Don't know much about the setup for the handling of bikes.

Next I have to check out the pipe swap from the KX to the Tecate.

I have an other 86 T3 in pieces, but one of the major problems with it are the fork tubes are slightly bent and no straight axle either and probably more.

Really?? Pretty sure 200X_basket had a 86 KX Tecate that ripped compared to the stock T3.
