    Manual Decompressor Lever, 350x

Im thinking of setting up a manual decompression lever on my 85 350x. I have tried to adjust the automatic one numerous times with no luck. Im thinkin of using the existing cable or just a regular bicycle cable and a bicycle lever, or customizing something off an xr, like my 400. Has anyone tried this before? I think it will work much more efficiently.

I put a small two finger lever on the left side handlebars with a cable running down to the decompression part of the motor.I have the goki electric starter.I just pull the lever and hit a button. It works very well.I like it.

    lever

Didn't the older 185 and 200's have manual decomp levers? Maybe one of those could be fitted to the 350x?

the 185's have it its just a flip lever (kinda like a choke) i think it would be difficult to convert one off of them

The 350X decomp lever is super sensitive. Sometimes 1 flat of the nut makes a difference.

But once it's set, it works perfect.

Sometimes I get in motors where people jam the activating cam on the kicker shaft in the wrong location....

What kind of cable did you use to run it to the handle bars? Any pictures of how you ran the cable under the tank or along the frame rail? I bought my thumper last year, and it didn't have a decomp cable. I got one for like $25 from my local Honda, but didn't install it yet, because I could still start it relatively easy all year. Now that it's winter, and I live in Alaska, it's a bich if it drops below 30°F. No Garage...

And I gotta say that Bob Marlin and Dirtcrasher have been super helpful from reading their replies over the years. This forum rocks!

I bought a "universal" cable end kit from the local parts store. It has a bunch of cable ends of different sizes. Pick the one that fits the decomp arm on the head, cut the cable to length and put the end on. The ends usually have a set screw to lock it onto the cable, I found them to slip too much, so after making sure the cable was functioning properly I silver soldered the end in place. I have 3 350x's and had to repair or rework all of the decomp systems. The only one that I found that I really needed is the one I put the Goki electric start on. Other than that I really didn't notice that much of a difference.

Maybe I'm missing something but it seems like a whole lot less work to just adjust the OEM setup properly. Mine works perfectly and was easy to dial in after my last valve adjustment.

You are 100% correct. The stock setup works the best. But if you have a Goki set up it doesn't work. You have to be able to activate it a different way because you are not using the kick starter. Also, around 50% of all the 350x's I've worked on has a broken decomp
lever locator inside the case, so it can't work unless you replace the side case. So then again you have to go to a manual lever set up. I've had a lot of people tell me their decomp won't stay adjusted, but mine have always stayed good for years. I think it might be a case of learning the proper "Start up" procedure on the 350 more than anything else.
