steering stem (what metal is it?)

do you guys know if the stem that goes through the neck of the frame is a special allow metal, or hardened etc.... I 'm still wanting to change the front end and the shops aren't seeming to work out ($150 and up for custom piece) I'm wondering if I can't get a bar, tube, or pipe from a metal supply co. and thread it myself and maybe work it a bit with a torch without comprimising the strength to much? thanks.

On my Frank's it's aluminum. On my Nicholson it soild 4140 bar. On my Honda's it thick walled tubing.

You should be able to make it out of mild steel bar stock turned down and treaded in a lathe.
