    My $300 KX250 1986

Not to be out done by "My $250 KX250 1986" thread seen here:
    http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthr...ap-with-Tecate

    Just picked up like 3 hours ago a 1986 KX250 for $300

    The BAD:

    Does not run.
    Mikuni VM round carb.
    Reeds.
Don't see coolant. Where did it go? The seller didn't have an answer.
Lot of oil under engine. Shift shaft seal leaky? Most of it is red filter oil?
Rust in a lot of places
Seat mounting tab on frame has been spot welded.
    Rear brakes pads almost gone
Cylinder has a lot of vertical scratches and unknown bore.
    Gas looks brown.
Someone painted the carb boot and it is flaking.
    Pipe has dents.
    No case saver.
Should have tried to offer $250

    The GOOD:
Cylinder is sleeved and has compression.
    Has spark.
Front forks not rusted. No leaks. Feel good.
Rear shock good and not looking stock with no leaks.
    Brakes work.
Shifts in all gears and turns the crankshaft.
    Oil is clean (new?)
    Clutch basket is not grooved.
Pro Circuit Pipe / DG Silencer
    Seat cover
    Plastics and tank
    Rims / rear tire
    Chain / sprockets ok.
    Frame/ triples / bars / swingarm
    Grips
Air box carb boot (I have three bad ones)
    Air filter
Nut and bolt heads not all rounded and stripped.
    Radiators
    Carb boot
    Pretty much complete.

Well installed new reeds. It came with a 40mm Mikuni VM carb (beginning to hate these). Decided to try the carb it came with. It leaks out the float bowl like the previous owner said it did. Had a 330 main in it. So I slapped a dry Uni pod on it and it started on like the 6th kick. Revved it a few times and shut it off.

So it runs, but the compression did not seem as high as my other $250 KX.

    Ok this bike has issues:

Got it started real easy. I did not check the needle clip position and the guido that had it before me put it in the bottom position. Who sets up a carb like that? Mikuni VM38 370 main with needle clip 2nd position from top. Starts and runs and drives.

The clutch cable broke. Tried a LT250R cable but does not have enough slack and is all wrong. But I verified gears 1-4.

Coolant was missing and the guy I bought it from had no explanation. Always a bad sign.
Head gasket is leaking at head stay. Possibly warped head. Bummer.

I am parting this bike out.

I told a guy locally about 4 months ago I would sell him the bottom end or the whole motor once I figured out what was up with it. He is offering $200 for the bottom end or $250 for the whole motor. Not only that, he can do some light welding work for me.

I need to keep the electrical and flywheel, kick start lever, shifter lever, intake boot, reeds,

Make me an offer including shipping. I would ship it in a cooler most likely.

I will include more details and pictures once I figure out what is going where.

Well more bad on this motor.

I'm lookin at piston and roller falls out needle bearing. Why? Piston isn't cut tight to the small rod end cause it is a 431 Wiseco not a 439. The 431 is for a 1981-1984 ATC 250R. WTF.

So many things have been done wrong on this bike. This is why you never know what you are gonna find when you buy a used bike from a stranger and this is why you should never pay too much for them.

Seller was asking $700 and readily took $300. Should have offered $250.

If your still interested in getting it going most of those things aren't a huge deal. even the head and cylinder will be fairly easy fixes.
This is where i get most of my aftermarket stuff

The bike is in pieces. I took the forks and tire off and put on my other KX250 to replace blown ones.
Need to swap the rear shock off it.

I wanted to put this motor in my 3 wheeler but really dont want to spend $100 or more for a piston kit. Hoping for a deal (wishing I had not sent one out with the 84 cylinder I sold).

My KX500 motor is getting closer to going in the Tecate.

    De Ja VU ............

Another 1986 KX250 for $300..... It was a local bike within 15 minutes so that helped.

Fingers crossed on this KX since it is missing the electrical system. The rectifier thing threw me at first then I spied a 21119-1074 CDI for 1984 Tecate I believe. Has compression and shock, forks, brakes worked. Went through all gears. Clutch basket not grooved. Good chain and sprockets.

Bonuses- decent silencer, oversized gas tank, leather tool bag (no treasures inside though), hand/ plastic guards and skid plate.

Holy crap I have way to many of these things.

I think the KX250 motor will go in the Tecate if it runs, it will get the tecate main crank gear and clutch basket.

Then I can use the KX250 frame to get my KX500 motor started and test the tecate stators ,cdis, flywheels I have.

Where do I get lapping compound for the flywheel ?

cobble together a Tecate ignition system with questionable wires and is untested. It looked like it sparked ok but I could not get fire even with starting fluid. Guess it's time to test some stator ohms (they tested bad...go figure).

Put on known good stator with CDI that came with bike and ricky type flywheel and it fired and turned over on a few drips of gas after like 5 kicks.

Tomorrow more CDI testing and getting a carb setup and draining/adding fluids, then hopefully a test ride.

The $300 KX250 is up and running through all gears. Started and idled on 5 kicks.

Fed by the stock 39mm round slide carb (has the dreaded Mikuni drip). Wasnt able to hit powerband here on my block (risk losing to the cops). Anyway it needs to be Loctited up and swapped over anyway. This motor is going in the Tecate.

Glad I didnt ride the bike much, there was no clip on the master link of the o-ring chain.
