i have a 85 atc 70 that ran perfect and it sat for a month in storage and when i tried to get it out and ride it wont go into gear. the shifter moves like half range and wont go into any gear. anyone have any suggestions? thanks in advance guys.

i will try that but it doesnt seem to be a clutch issue unless the clutch will actually keep the shifter from moving full range. its not going into gear at all so its not a slipping clutch. i will check it out though. it really seems like maybe the gear selecter inside is in a bind i guess i will try to adjust that then open it up thanks

Other than that, you'll have to take off some covers and look at the goodies.
SO many times it's something that broke, fell off or it's just loose.
HONDA made a good tranny, it's usually NOT in the center case

here is a start , look under the right side cover, if you find that you need to repair something, you will need the special clutch tool. If you don't have one DR ATV.com has them .

i opened it up and that shift drum stopper arm broke in half so thats why nothing happened when i shifted. luckly i was able to stand the 3 wheeler on its back wheels and bounce it and the piece fell out of the motor! not to bad for the first time it has ever been opened up in 24 years. thanks guys

Glad you looked into it. So many guys say "it's got a bad tranny" and so many times it's merely the shift drum lock mechanism and or related parts, I think some people just diagnose without even looking!
I bought a 250SX that the guy said "It's got a bent shift fork" : "won't stay in gear" and it ended up being a bolt that backed off
All these models/makes really do have some tough trannies that take ALLOT of abuse.
The only bad tranny I've dealt with is the 87200X when Honda thinned out and changed the 3rd gear components and they do break in half unfortunately.

This is very interesting, I have got a 1985 ATC70 in very good shape that has not run in years....I bought it and it has been sitting with my other machines on my "to do" list for a good year and a half now... Its main problem that led to it sitting so long? won't shift!!

yeah i never throw anything away saying its bad besides my 350x motor that blew at 70mph. its trash with a couple good parts but i kept it even. i had several 70cc motors/trannys laying around so i had the parts luckily. whipit- i bet if you open the right side cover and look at the far top left behind the transmission gear you will find your problem.
