1985 Tecate 250 Rescue **please move this thread to trikesylvania**

okay so i am completely rebuilding a 1985 Tecate KXT... when i bought it the bike was in pieces and the carb was filthy with scum and Permatex all over everything... i cleaned it but it has a 300 main jet... thats not stock, i believe stock main jet size is 260... i have options.. what do you guys think the best side is for my Tecate? 240, 250, 260(stock), 270 or 280?? I would rather not run a 300 because that would cause the motor to run much to rich and i def don't wanna change the plugs every ride cuz they're fouled.... Also i noticed there was not a scratch on the cylinder walls or piston. Guy i bought it from says it was raced. The kicker gear was just replaced. He did it in my driveway so i knew it was new and i have a complete gasket rebuild kit. ill get to that after this carburetor is finished. My needle is slightly S shaped but i will be trying it to see if it runs rich or not, if not i will keep it, otherwise i am going to replace it. As far as reeds, i haven't taken the cage off yet to see whats going on in there. Ill be posting pics soon.

What other set ups is everyone else running and what kind of trike??

I agree with Ben! Also might wanna check your flywheel and if its still stock, send it to jeswinehart to get refurbed so it doesnt fly apart and take out your stator. That'll save you some headaches that are sure to happen at some point if they havent already to the PO. As far as you needle being S shaped, Id check for a rebuild kit and just do the whole carb and eliminate some guess work then do the fine tuning. I run weisco piston and rings and havent and problems but it is just like anything else, do you maint. and treat it right and youll be ok. Race it, mix it to lean and beat the crap out of it and youll have constant problems. I got mine in the same condition as you did, am still working out bugs years later. I did my first rebuild on it with out 3WW because Im old school and didnt believe in needing a computer, so you will be better than me. Good luck! Im getting ready to do mine all over again, the right way....
    Just sit back and chillaxx

Very nice work guys. And yes stock pipe and filter but I will be upgrading at some point but it is race bored and not sure on piston but new and very clean. I have no idea as far as flywheel though, it looks old. Roughly how much did you spend on your flywheel?
I bought the stock jet just in case. 260

Race bored eh? Watch out with that thing then...

Like the other guys have told you, if there is an aftermarket pipe on there then it's been jetted to run right with that pipe. A 300 sounds like roughly the size jet you would expect to see on a Tecate with an aftermarket pipe and a, um, "race bore".

what is the number on the top of the piston? I'm think you meant or (were given bad info) race port) post detailed pics of the cylinder on the intake side and exhaust and we tell you if we spot a port job

Ok. I just took a look and I don't see any over bore. I haven't taken the piston out yet. And I ordered 250,260,270,280, & 290 jets. Stock pipe and they cut the silencer off of it and put a fmf silencer on with a hose clamp. Looks rigged I will be replacing that in the near future. I will be posting pics. I think the previous owner put a 300 in thinking it would be faster... But just runs rich with no pipe. I took the airbox out and I will be running open filter most likely. Haven't decided if im going to put it back in yet. I have new jet needle, gasket set, jets, clutch cable coming. Just put new msr bars on it.

The first thing you're going to want to do is get rid of that stock pipe. They choke the poor Tecate to death.

I would recommend leaving the airbox in the bike. Removing it is not going to gain you a whole lot and you'll be very susceptible to sucking water in the intake.

Ryan, if you run open filter (which is perfectly fine), be sure to support/secure the carb and/or filter in one fashion or another.
As it is now, you are relying on a 20 plus year old intake boot that in Tecate world has a proven history to crack and suck air, even when the are secured by factory air box.
I reproduce those intake boots, and guarantee them too, but with no support ~ warranty void.

P.S. - if you click the links in my previous post it shows what I do with flywheels. I am sure you may have some good ideas along similar lines you could come up with at your shop.

If you got the funds a Jemco is a great pipe, thinking around $370 and its better than a dg. This is on my husbands (84t3) x-mas list and he has told me how bad he NEEDS one!!
