2 strokes still have transmission/engine oil, but it shouldn't be in the crank area. There might be a little 2 stroke mix left over from running/trying to start the engine in the past in the crank area, that's why sometimes a 2 stroke will smoke a lot when it first starts, or after idling for a while then revving it out, atleast that's my understanding of it. Anyway, the transmission section of the engine should have some sort of drain somewhere. Looks like the fill is on the right side of the machine (left side in the photo). The service manual would suggest what grade of oil to run and such, I suspect some people run transmission fluid in them, but normal ATV oil is probably what it normally calls for. Also note, ATV oil isn't anything super special, the biggest thing is that it has to have the right certs for wet clutches. A lot of engine oils are made with friction modifiers which will make wet clutches slip. Rotella T was one of the oils with the right certs, but I can't remember which weight had the right one, the other weight didn't have them. Rotella T is pretty good oil even though it's made by Pennzoil (never run that junk unless you 100% always change your oil very often).

Anyway, looks like it's coming along well. Should be a fun machine to ride, never had a Yamaha 3 wheeler besides a Tri-Z for a short while with a couple major issues.

What could be the problem if my trike will only start then die seconds later when I put gas in the spark plug hole?

Lack of fuel would be the first obvious guess.

Yea I'd agree, lack of gas from the carb to cylinder. First guess would be carb, second be fuel delivery to the carb.

Probably best if the gas you're using is premix (guess it is but never hurts to say it). Starting it this way doesn't really lube the bottom end, but not a problem for a few test fires. At least you know one thing, your ignition system is working fine.

Ahh didn't know about the oil injection. Not too on top of non-Honda 3 wheelers.

It probably needs crank seals to be honest.

Would a bad crank seal prevent it from running?

It's unlikely. It's more likely it would run but not well, and it could potentially run away if the seals were bad enough I would imagine, but that would be a really extreme case.

So I got it running. Bad head gasket was the problem. Won't stay running now. Sounds odd to almost like something rubbing

    K. Sounds to me like maybe the piston rings rubbing or scratching

What did you do to clean up the cylinder? That old piston looked pretty rough.
