I have a 85 200x when i bought it the guy told me that when it got hot it would shut off which he was right. He put a brand new pickup coil in it so i checked the gap on it and set it to spec. Played with the carb set that to the specs now it dont want to run at all, now im confused. I put it back to the way he had it and it runs now but it still shuts off when it gets hot. Also its a pain to start when its cold and hot. Its got a full pipe on it also. I dont know what to do im confused. Any suggestions. Thanks

could be a bad gasket/seal somewhere between the carb and the head. see it with lawn mowers all the time. i assume when it cools off, it starts back up again easily?

No it always started hard i dont know maybe its leaking some where it runs pretty good tell it gets hot, it seem to run a little rich if anything the plug is a golden brown, is the cdi going bad or the coil or the pulse coil it seems to have ok spark. The cover for the pickup coil seem really hot when its about to shut off.

When it shuts off hot are you still getting spark? Bright blue spark? You say it shuts off when it gets hot, like how long? 2 min, 10min, 20min. Will it restart when its hot or does it have to cool down?

I guess i didnt check if it did have spark or not after it shut off, when i let it idle after ive been riding it only idles for 30 secs maybe then it shuts off, sometimes it will restart when its hot it depends how long ive been riding it, if ive been riding along time it wont restart until its completly cold

im going to say ignition coil. When it gets hot, it craps out. Look for good connections at all the electrical connections...Ohm it out when cold then when hot. You should see the ohms change if its toast

Check the coil, like Deepa said...they get hot and quit when their bad. Adjust the valves too...

Ok sounds good im assuming u mean the coil that goes to the plug, i have been told that the pluse coil might be bad yes or no? thanks

Well frist thing to do when you get a Used Bike, Change - OIL, Spark Plug, Air Filter, Adjust the Valve's , Clean the Gas Tank & filter, Tear Down the Carb Clean all the ports add New Gaskets.

You can buy new fuel lines ...

I'm going to chime in here. I'm new to trikes (don't even have one yet LOL) but on some 80's HONDA motorcycles I have seen MANY times where the pulse generators do exactly as you're describing. On my Shadow anyway it has 2, and you can check the resistance pretty easy if you have a meter. On my bike it's somewhere around 500 ohms I believe, but yes I've seen several times when they open up or go real high resistance when hot.

^50-150 ohms on the 85 200x pulse generator.

yea, id go with pulse generator, its def not a air leak around the carb area. if it was it would go into a higher rev when started then it should. a small air leak can cause it to jump rpm's pretty high. unless its doing this and u did not say so. i would put my money on the pulse generator. or ignition coil.
