Folks,

Saturday August 22nd and Sunday August 23rd are the official dates that we'd like to host another great outing.

Turtles and Tapper - Doug from Ottawa found that the trail pass (to access the track system 100% legally) can be bought at the local hardware store in Stirling for $12 a day. So that will be some fairly reasonable piece of mind if we're to travel further.

We also stumbled upon a great place to have a lunch or dinner with reasonable prices in the town of Stirling called the Black Dog. An atv friendly atmosphere and top notch eats.

So.. I will leave it at that, figured it would be best to start a new thread then to continue the multiple paged one that may be overlooked.

Shannon and I will be there for sure, possibly my brother as well on his quad, we'll spend the night as well in the trailer. Looking forward to the ride.

Awesome! great to hear the early "for sures"

And 2 days is definitely a good thing.. there's alot of places to ride around here and trying to cram a day full of ripping to see them all is impossible and would kill the body.

I don't think they have to worry about wood,

I'm on the fence with this one, I checked the calender and my sister-in-law has a BBQ that day. I'm going away on holidays with them next week, so I'll find out if they will be upset if I don't make it. (riding is more important than eating! ). I'll keep you posted!

Right on Locknut, should be able to get a mean rip roaring fire going without a problem. Hell if there is a problem I'm sure there will be more than enough jerry cans with fuel laying around ;)

Tapper, if you can;t get out of the bbq on Sat, you could always swing in on Sun.. either way hope you can make it out.

I hear ya Tapper... a happy wife makes a happy life ;)

I'm trying to convince my Mrs. to come (I even offered to buy her a 250sx) but she seems to think of it as another toy for ME as opposed to a toy for her. She might be right ;)

Alas, some of us aren't as lucky as RoscoW to have as cool of a wife as Shannon! Broken bones from an ATC and she STILL loves to ride!!!

Either way myself and another dirtbiking buddy will be there! Bit can't make it this time, but another dirtbiking buddy of mine wants to come... he's missing a wheel, but maybe if he see's how cool trikes are, he'll buy one for next summer ;)

Nice work on the burn trough Kevin, looks great. I Just ordered new chain and sprockets, and a new rear brake disk. I'm thinking that I will order one of the aluminum skid plates off E-bay also. I'm hoping on having everything in tip-top shape for this ride, so I don't have to bail out early.:w00t:

No haven't got a case saver yet, the cheapest I have seen is about $50.00 on e-bay. I haven't checked the Honda dealer yet, but seems a little expensive for a piece of metal.

I bit the bullet after breaking my cracking my banshee cases once.. the case saver I bought was also a hefty $50.. companies love to charge heavy for piece of mind.

then again, getting towed home, having to tear the bike completely apart, splitting the cases and getting charged $45 to have a machine shop weld up aluminum fracture that was pissing tranny fluid really sucked. :(

I seem to recall that I only paid around $20 for mine at the Honda dealer, but I could be mistaken with all of the other parts that I bought,

Hmm.. well at least with a new chain, chances of a snap, crackle, "trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro" are alot less likely.. but hopefully ebay pulls through.

those bolt on the outside of the motor correct? jimmy-riggin it could be a possibility..a small piece of metal with screw holes drilled in it a way to banana shape it.

I hadn't been to the Marmora Mine the past two years and didn't know if there was still good riding to be had in the area..

Tonight I decided to venture up there and I got a few pics of an area that may indeed be worth exploring as a big group ; )

On a side note, I was stopped by 2 police officers on the trail and they happily let me on my way after checking over my paperwork. I asked them if I technically needed a "trail pass" to run the railway beds and the answer was a "yes". However they were in no hurry to lay any fines even though I didn't have one. But for piece of mind we'll stop by the hardware store in Stirling where they can be purchased for $12. Apparently a "trespassing charge" can be laid if the cop is having a rough day.

I know of a few people who have ruined their machines here, so everyone will have to use their own common sense and good judgment on what they and their trikes are capable of.. Last thing anyone wants to see is a beautiful rare trike flipping down a hill and into extinction.... would make a hell of a video though..

if i were to Guess i would say the 3rd one? i was wondering but is a Trail Pass the only Paperwork Needed or is more than the Trail Pass needed?

toomeysheele
08-06-2009, 11:36 PM
nope.. not the 3rd pic :D

To legally run the railway bed and the roads(around here) one has to be plated, insured and have ownership.. so basically all the legality hassle you can ask for...
The trail pass is just needed for the railway bed which joins towns, riding areas, and beyond.

I think the cops were impressed enough that I had all of the above(minus the stupid trail pass) and weren't out to totally screw everyone in their path.

The $12 pass is a day pass.. I've never had one myself, but for a big ride with alot of riders it wouldn't be a bad idea.

Say, does anyone have a copy of the owner and service manuals for an 85 250r they can e-mail me? I am picking one up (hopefully) nexy week.

Cheers.

Changes to Ontario's Off-Road Vehicles Legislation/RegulationsMunicipal Authority Regarding Off-Road Vehicles
Where Off-Road Vehicles Can/Cannot Travel

Off-road vehicles (ORVs) now have more access to the shoulder and paved portions of some Ontario highways. These new regulations, effective July 31, 2003, apply exclusively to one category of ORV. This is defined as an off-road vehicle that:

has four wheels, the tires of which are all in contact with the ground;
has steering handlebars;
has a seat that is designed to be straddled by the driver;
is designed to carry a driver only and no passengers; and
meets requirements of federal Motor Vehicle Safety Act (MVSA) and American National Standards Institute (ANSI standard).
New regulations do not apply to other types of off-road vehicles such as mini-bikes, dirt bikes and moto-cross bikes.

I'm familiar with the areas we can legally ride around here. Thanks for digging up some old article from 2003 and its a very nice 1st post you have there.. anyways the townships that legalized road travel in this area don't discriminate against 3 wheels.

My niece has a 3wheeler you can borrow - it doesn't require insurance and you can even ride it on the (side of the) road. If you leave Kitchener Wednesday night, you *might* make it to the pits by Saturday...

Sorry, to much going on this weekend

ahhh, too bad Tapper - you'll be missed!

So Brad - what is the "rough plan" for the day? Are we meeting at your place for 10am, then heading to pick up our trail passes and go from there?

What time would you guess that we'll be visiting the "Marmora Mine"?... if possible and if time allows, I'd like to make a small detour to a cottage on the North end of Marmora ( http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=54+MacKenzie+Rd,+Marmora,+ON,+Canada&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=61.711173,106.962891&ie=UTF8&z=17&iwloc=A ). A person I work with has a cottage there and her husband just picked up an ATV. Apparently there are a few trail heads that lead out from their cottage so if we have extra time to explore i'd like to pick him up for a bit of trail riding (he can head back whenever he wants on his own). I'm not sure how close to the mine that is, but maybe we could even pick him up on the way to the mine - he just purchased the ATV last weekend so he doesn't know the area very well yet.

At any rate I'm really looking forward to this weekend - let's hope the weather is nice for us!

Meeting at 10am worked good before so we'll aim for that time again.

B.J I definitely don't see any issue meeting up with your friend at his cottage.

I'd like to hit the one pit we traveled to last ride first thing in the morning, then have a lunch and head to the Marmora area after that. Mainly because the one pit is definitely a cool riding area, and those who aren't able to stay for Sunday would be able to get a chance to ride it. The trail passes can be purchased when we head through the town of Stirling on the way to Marmora, also any snacks and gas can be consumed. On the way back we can grab supper at a well priced, atv/c friendly restaurant. Then we'd return to base camp and it would probably be after 6pm.... Well deserved rest and relaxation time. :beer

How's the fuel thing work, are we close to your place for refueling or should I bring oil to mix at a station?

toomeysheele
08-17-2009, 08:51 PM
We can refuel at lunch(here) which will make us good to go for a while, but we will likely want to refuel in Marmora.. so us 2 strokers will need our oil.. I'll be wearing a backpack and I'll have mine in there, along with a ratio cup, so if you have a 1ltr jug or something like that I don't mind carrying it.. No sense wearing a pack just for oil.. I'll have few waters, some real basic tools and a tow strap( hope we don't need it) and my camera.

Hmm.. I've found all kinds on Craigslist, but it depends how far your willing to drive for one, and obviously it would have to be a title and be legal for you to be able to bring it across the border.. unless you disassemble it and bring it back as parts ;)

They still don't like disassembling them, it's the frame that causes all the problems, at least it did on one of my cross boarder deals. It depends on the officer at the booth, two other deals, I didn't have a problem.

I know you're looking for a 250r, but if you'll "settle" (hahahah - slight stab at you 4 strokers ;) for a 350x, there's one for sale on kijiji right now. They are hard to find in Ontario it seems... they are few and far between so if you're interested in one you better move fast!

hahaha Beauty! you did some research : ) The place is fairly new, and I've only been there once but it definitely seemed like a great place to overindulge.

They keep trying to open up more and more townships around for legal road riding, as it brings tourism to the towns, since the trail users can now go into cafe's, shops, and everything else that used to be inaccessible to riders. :)

The number here is 613 968 7570, for anyone who may be a bit late, or is turned around. Ask for Brad or Kev.

Well, it looks like I'm gonna be on 2 wheels intead of 3 this weekend :(

I have been trying for the past two weeks to get back to my parent's house to pickup my 250r, but each time I've been thwarted for one reason or another. It's 2 hours due West of Toronto (complete opposite direction of "the pits") so I really doubt I'm going to be able to get back to pick it up before Saturday...

So I"ll be riding my husky te450 this weekend I guess - but I'm thinking of pulling a "Ross" and bringing a spare machine just in case ;) I've been fighting to fix a coolant leak on my '89 cr125 two stroke, and FINALLY have it licked I believe (knock on wood - man, I don't know how you guys put up with those 25 year old water pumpers!!! All the BS I've went through in the past 3 months with first my minivan, then my husky, and now my cr125 I'm SOOOO glad I have an air fooler for my trike!!!) So I need to get the honda out of the city and give it a good run to verify my coolant problems are solved - this seems like the perfect opportunity ;)

Is there somewhere (ie even a tree) I can lock my 2nd bike up while we're off riding?

I've been waiting for this weekend for so long, I can't wait for Saturday!!!

I was going to ask the same thing BJ, We're sleeping in the trailer and need a spot to lock up my spare. If my brother wasn't throwing his quad in the back of the truck I would have picked up your machine and brought it down, sounds like it's around London somewhere.

See you tomorrow AM

That's awful nice of you to think of me Ross, but it would have added at least an hour to your trip (my parents live near goderich) so I would never have let you do that for me. I'm just glad to hear that your brother is coming - the more the merrier!

Speaking of more, another riding buddy of mine wants to join us. He's going to meet us at your place Brad - his name is Jeff.

See you guys tomorrow! Although the weather won't be as nice as first predicted, it's still a relatively good forecast!

Sorry to hear the airfooler wont be making an appearance B.J, that Husky ought to still be a classic though :)

Can`t wait, and yes there will be space to store the bikes securely overnight. If for some reason theres not enough space in the garages and shed, we`ll lock em all together.

The weather men just changed the forecast to 70% chance of showers in the afternoon.. I`m banking on the 30% chance of beautiful weather, and they`re awesome at being wrong, so keep the fingers crossed.

Thanks so much for everyone that came out and made the event a great success.

Its unfortunate that all couldn't stay the night and get out this morning, the early rain soon cleared up and made for a good trek and some more gravel pit action.
I didn't get too many pics, and if Doug hadn't snagged my camera today from my backpack many of these wouldn't have been possible. Thanks dude.

Yeah thanks everone for coming out, great ride, awesome group of people,
Well I tore into my R today and found the reason for the loss of bottom end. I thought it was a broken reed, but i didn't get that lucky. A peice of piston skirt broke off and held the reed open........

Aw Kevin, that blows... sorry for your luck man, but at least the back up banshee did the trick this weekend. Thanks so much for being such great hosts, we had a fantastic time. Traffic back through Toronto was brutal so it was near 8:30 before we got back, but Ross and I are both glad that we put on the wetsuits and went with you guys this morning for sure.

Brad, thanks for posting that video! Now there is PROOF that the blaster (and it's rider) can actually get air borne.

So with Xhumeka's 125K on the GPS and what we rode today, I'd guess we'd be pretty close to 200K. Well, my butt thinks so anyway.

It was a great time, no injuries (well except for Kevin's piston :() very few breakdowns, and some kick butt pancakes, all in all I'd say it was definitely a success.

I'm uploading pics and video's tonight and one of us will post some tomorrow, I'm off to have a shower and crash.

Thanks again to everyone!!! See you soon!

Oh man, that sucks! Sorry to hear that Kev... but kudos to your 'gut instinct' - you immediately thought it had something to do with the reeds! Just too bad it was something more serious that were to blame for the stuck reed.

Hopefully you and WhiteRat get your 250r's fixed in time for another ride soon...

Here's a video of our venture into the town of Stirling to pick up our trail passes. As Ross mentioned to me as we pulled into the Home Hardware parking lot - it sure felt weird riding into town on a bunch of ORVs!

At Least it didn't go down, you'd be doing the top and bottom like me.

Thanks for all the offers for the back up bikes, just didn't feel like killing two in one day.

Brad and Kevin, your great hosts and you'll be seeing me out next year, 20 minutes in one pit isn't enough.

Hi Everyone!

Finally chiming in!

First off - big thanks to Kev & Brad for such an awesome weekend. The most exciting riding I have ever done!

Would also like to extend a thanks to the group. You are a great crew that embody what I feel the ATV/ATC sport truly represents.

BJ - thanks for posting the video. It's awesome & I know this took work on your part!....and here I thought you where just looking at me all the time...lol

Shannon - I'm practicing my shifting and you won't get a break like that again.

Kev - that's hilarious and definitely the nicest three-wheeler I've seen in a while.

Talk soon,

Doug.

Doug, watch for a new thread before the end of the week.

Finally got some video uploaded

Helmet cam from the second pit we rode at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSjAGWiKF9M
I had another from here but I'm having an issue uploading it

Helmet cam footage from the ride to the big mine, 3 parts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kjzx0vo3vCI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qNgXsNBJ3M
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFORczsZ67I

That's all I have for now, We didn't have the settings correct on the goPro and the first set were just still pics, and the batteries died at the big pit so no return footage,
Just have to do it all over again.

We have some HD video from our good Camera but we need to find a video converter to get it out of the Sony language to something we can upload. Look for it soon.

I'd like to organize a run to Bancroft sometime in the near future.. Its a good trek and once again Bancroft is an atv friendly area as well. There is a great pit on the way to..

Then again.. I'd happily entertain other idea ;)

I created some avatars from the pits footage - sorry if you don't have one, I didn't have good shots of everyone. Some shots are better than others...

These should all be less than 100x100 pixels in size, so should work fine as an avatar (at least on these forums).

Each post is only allowed 15 linked images, so another post will follow with some more.
