howdy yall. im not new here but its been a while since i last posted. i was at a garage sale and the guy had a fairly complete 85 250es big red, a 250 block in pieces, and three parts bikes, basically frames. asking $150. that was already a good deal but i offered $100 and he said yes!! so i got the big red running and it runs like a top but theres something wrong with the gears. it acts like the gears arent fully engaging, and when you get it in gear it slips back out most of the time. the shifter was loose on the splines but i got that temporarily fixed. im guessing they drove it like that and screwed something up by grinding the gears half way engaged. any ideas what it could be? also it has an other than stock carb on it. it kept wanting to die, acting like it was running out of gas, so i figured id pull the carb off and clean it up seeing the bike sat for a year, and the piece that the throttle cable screws into broke off. luckily there was another carb just like it on the spare engine, but its pretty dirty. im hoping it will clean up, its soaking right now. i have the skills to pull it apart to fix whatever is wrong with the trans, but i will need to find a service manual. any chance someone can post up a schematic? lol ill post pics of all of them tomorrow.

anyways its gonna get a full restore for sure, but im thinking about a 300 swap. i know all the info on swapping one in(thanks to this site). im not sure what im gonna do. i do have another 85 big red that runs fine so i know what kind of low end it has already. i want a 350x but i also want a mud toy so this will be it. alot of people tell me 4 wheelers are better in the mud but ive been riding atc's since i was little and if you know how to ride one there just as good or better. i will post my restore progress here.

thanks for reading and please feel free to post any ideas, schematics, info i might need.
thanks,
John

well i pulled it apart and found a tooth in the bottom of the engine. i dident see any other problems so i guess i would have to split the case to fix it. i have another engine just like it that came with the stuff that i could swap that top end onto but the engine sat outside with the side covers off for a long time by the looks of it so i dont think that would be good. it still turns over but still. im just gonna find a good running trx300 with a bad rear or something and use it for parts. add a big bore kit, just do a full frame off. sound good?

i am currently living in fort worth but am in the process of moving to the houston area. cleveland to be exact. thats where im at now and also where the trike is.

ive been thinking about the look i want and i think ive decided. ive always thought of these 250 big reds as tanks, because there slow, but powerful. so i would like to ditch the plastics and make custom fenders. i want to use like diamond plate but in the unfortunate event of a wreck that would tear you up something fierce, so i was thinking i could bend some tubing for the basic frame of the fenders then weld the diamond plate on and smooth the edges so it would not have a sharp edge. true it would not flex (and crack) like plastics if i wrecked, but it wouldent be as bad as the sharp edges. i think that would look really cool. also not as expensive as new fenders.
that mixed with the 300 and big bore kit, full restore and a few touches here and there would make for an awesome tank themed trike. :D i have a habit of adding a theme to everything i have and build. i have a 66 chevy truck that im building as a "farm rod". flatbed, flat black with lime green roof and wheels and a steep rake :naughty: . my daily driver 91 suburban is the battle wagon.

thanks for reading,
