I got an 86 tecate the other day that hadn't been started in a couple years. I checked the fluids added fresh 20:1 fuel, new B8es plug, and cleaned the carb. After I put the carb back on I kicked it a couple of times and it started up. I went to give it some throttle and it didn't rev the engine much at all. It was like it had no power regardless of throttle position. Also it will only run about 30 seconds and then dies regardless of throttle position or idle adjustment.
I don't know any histoy on the trike. It has a dg pipe and silencer on it and the air box has been replace with a K&N filter. The carb looks to be aftermarket also, Its a round slide Mikuni with a main jet, pilot jet and idle adjustment screw and choke. It seems real basic, I was suprised that it didn't have an air/fuel adjustment screw on it.
I don't have a compression checker but it blows my finger off the sprk plug hole no problem. I don't know if I am missing something obvious and I know nothing about the tecate's. I also noticed that the engine has kx 250 stamped on a plate above the kickstarter. Are tecate motors stamped this way or is it possible to directly drop in a kx250 motor? Any help will be much appreciated as I an anxious to get this thing ripping along.

I am pretty new to 2 strokes also and I have just got a 86' tecate. I will tell ya what I know. Sounds like if it runs and then quites after 30 secounds is must not be getting gas well. Mix the gas 32:1 with some good quality oil. 20:1 was used back then when the gas was leaded, nows it unleaded gas so you mix it not as rich. The engine should say Kawasaki of course but on the top end it says KIPS which is Kawasaki Integrated Powervalve System which I guess is why these things are so fast. If yours dont say that it must not be the original motor. Heres some pics of mine and you can see KIPS in the one pic.

Hope this helps.

The carb sounds like the standard Mikuni, these are pretty basic, main jet standard should be 270.Check your float height to make sure its getting enough gas, also the rubber carb boot,as they crack with age and can leak air.20/1 mix is fine,it will be sweet standard no problem. There should be manuals on here somewhere so then you can check the KIPS valves for correct function.

You have the stock carb. 20:1...32:1...doesn't matter...that's not the problem nor is it a leaded/unleaded fuel problem. Make sure the pilot circuit is absolutely clean and that the needle goes back down in the needle jet when you put the slide back in the carb.

KX250 is stamped on all '86 Tecate motors.

Yes triple check the slow and main jets. You need to be able to see daylight through them when you hold them in the sky.

i agree with the pilot circuit,
