i am trying to get this 200x i bought running and cant figure it out

-it has spark
-has fuel
-i dont have a compression checker but will blow my fingers off the plug hole

I took the oil checker off to check and see how much oil was in it. It was fine but the oil was like burnt. As soon as I took it off I could smell it. This must be my problem. Anyone know what could have done this? sounds to me like its going to need a rebuild.

I took the stator off and checked the camshaft since the guy I bought it from said the camshaft was bad. I put a different camshaft that I had that was not worn at all and everything else seemed to be good. I didnt take the head off cuz it didnt want to go through all the work of taking the motor out. But I think I am going to have to do that next and check the valves and piston. Any suggestions.

Could it not run cuz the timing is way off?

pull the plug and put some gas in the hole put plug back in and give a few kicks,if it starts for a sec then its your carb.

Is the VALVE timing off??

Do the T and the O line up when they should?

Is the cam 180 out??

i am going to have to check the valve timing and mess with the cam again when i get time

when i took the cam out im not totalled sure i had to at TDC but i took it off anyways. I put the cam chain back on the exact spot it was on the cam sprocket. The cam should be pointed down right when i put it in?

how exactually do i check flywheel key? i am going to look at the manul and see if its in there

Posty, sounds like you may need this link to 200x manual http://72.52.143.80/~trikes/atc200x_83-85_servicemanual.pdf . This will help you.

i do have the manual, 2 different .pdf and and one paper copy. Just need to look in it again about the timing.

i tried this today, nothing still like its dead no fire. If i keep kickin it over should the plug be getting wet, cuz its bone dry now.

sounds like your valve timing is out of wack.

on my 185s the flywheel key was broken. so when you lined up your timing with the flywheel. it was always slightly off. and caused the same problem. if you have set your timing using the markings and its still doing this. pull the flywheel and check the key out.

low compression ? I would start with a simple compression check. 15.00 at Harbor freight. Sure saved me a lot of time.

ok tonight i got it running, the valve timing was off, I lined up the T and the O and she fired right up. I got it to idle but it smokes alittle and has a good ticking to the topend. Any idea was this would be?

I adjusted the valves to what i thought was spec. I lined up the O on the flywheel and both valves had alittle play in them like about 3/16". The gap is the one between the valve its self flat end and the adjusting screw right? I adjusted it to about 1/16" and it still ticks the same. Any suggestions about the tick? I think the cam chain is worn, could I just tighten that up?

I had to quit now since i didnt wanna wake up the neighborhood with that cobra exhaust. lol:cool:

Now seriously. Whats more important here? A running trike, or a peacful relationship with your neighbors???

To hell with them!!!

im not 100% sure if the 200x has a cam chain tensioner bolt. but i know the 185s and the 200m/ e /es has them. slowly tighten it up while its running till the clicking stops.

You need to adjust the valves lined up on the T mark (top of the compression stroke), not the O.

You need to use a 0.003 in. feeler gauge to adjust the clearance ("about 1/16", isn't gonna work).

I just tightened it up more than it was, i didnt want to tightin it to much cuz i dont want to damage something else with it to tight.

Took her for a nice ride today, about 2 hour ride. It ran good even tho it still ticked, I tried tightening up the cam chain before and didnt seem like it did much. It said just loosen the bolt up and it will adjust itself then tighten it up if I remember right. It has no brakes and I was going down hill on a trail with a 90degree corner at the bottom and i didnt make it lol. I rolled it right over me and cut my foot up. I lost all the skin on the back of my heal cuz I got my foot caught in the tire. lol So it hurts to wear shoes and socks right now. lol Didnt hurt the 200x at all tho besides bent the wheely bar somehow. All in all was a good day. I am going to adjust the valves again when I am home this coming weekend and see if its any better. She ran good but smoked alittle and used some oil. What is the best way to go about burning oil? Just take some and add some here and there or what? I dont really wanna put alot of money into a topend rebuild unless I have to. It doesnt smoke really bad but noticeable.

Wish i took some pics but wasnt really planning on going for much of a ride.
