****UPDATES ON PAGE 2****

Got up at 5:30am this morning and drove 130 miles to get this little guy from a guy for $200. The only known problem on it was it needs an ignition coil. It didn't take me but 5 minutes to start tearing this thing apart to clean it and just go through it haha.

First thing I noticed was the throttle was sticking so I thought it might have been the spring in the thumb throttle housing but it was the carb....It was just stuck with gunk. I have never taken apart a 3-wheeler carb in my life and don't really know where to start. Can I soak it in something? Or should I just start tearing it apart and cleaning it? Can I use WD-40 or should I go get some carb cleaner?

Second up is the tires, the right rear tire has a hole in it and won't hold air at all so where is the best place to get some cheap tires?

The plastics, tank and seat are in great shape with minor dents or scrapes and it appears to have not seen much use at all. The only thing I am not pleased with is the stickers on the rear fenders, gotta take those off as they are flaking.

I got it to fit in my bmw wagon no problem, just loosened the handle bars and turned them down.

Another thing, the rear tires were mounted differently.....the right side (the one with the flat tire had the hub on the outside of the rim so the air valve was on the inside of the rim and the left one was the opposite.....Which is the correct way?

When I first got it in the garage:

buy some evaporust at hardware and soak carb. Tires cheap at Tractor supply for 22.00 each if they are around you. You sure you have never took a carb apart?? I see a sand tire and a possible 200x in the pic? Is that your's?? Oh ya, nice 70 for the price........ the 70's are worse than potato chips, never just one!!

HONESTLY - Sometimes I ride the 70 over the race 200X or the 350X, they are just sooooo much fun and like a super minibike :D

I've worked on carbs on like RC cars and stuff but not trikes. And yes that's my 200x in the background but I have yet to take the car apart on it!

And we don't have tractor supply around here.....I was gonna order online or something.

Those sand tires and rims are going to be for sale, I never go to the dunes they just came with my 200x.

What's the best way to get rust out of the tank, it is not completely rusted but there is some in there. And Evaporust is good to soak the carb in? Just take off all the rubber fittings and such?

It looks you got a good deal to me. There isn't much to those carbs, just take it apart and spray it out with carb cleaner. Check the points, that could also be the problem. The coils rarely go bad with those.

Were missing out here too on all the good stuff!! :D

Our Sonic has some hottie Car Hops ... Tight Khaki shorts .... ummmmm .... ummmm ... ummmm !!! Out tractor supply has some hot cowgirls as cashiers there ... Love Gals in Wranglers ... That climb shelves and put their young bottoms in your face and say ... "is that what you want mister ?"

Here is a link to the site for the stuff. 21.00 per gallon plus shipping but I am telling ya, worth it..... http://www.evaporust.com/ Like daddio said as well, carb cleaner and air will work but if it is like the junk I work on.....soaking is a better option for severe problem carbs. Rode the 2hundy in the sand yet?? It is safe for the seals and will work in the tank as well. Biodegradable, easy on the nose and hands!

Get yourself a POR15 tank kit (http://www.por15.com/CYCLE-TANK-REPAIR-KIT/productinfo/CTRK/). Don't waste your time or money with Kreem. Aerosol carb cleaner should be fine to clean up your carb. Most auto parts stores also have a gallon bucket of cleaner that works the best. They come with a tray you put your parts on and lower into the bucket to soak.

Yea he said they took it to a mechanic and it was getting very little to no spark and it needs a coil.

How long do I let the carb soak?

It also needs a new thumb part for the thumb throttle, it is stripped out and won't catch on the mechanism inside :( Anyone have an extra they want to sell?

Ok I am going to try and adjust the contact points today. I also want to re-paint the exhaust for the 70 and 200x. I was gonna go get some high temp engine paint and do it but they both are pretty rusty....Should I just get some sand paper and sand them down a bit before painting them? I also think I have a different throttle then most of them because I can't find a single thumb throttle arm on eBay....Mine is not inside the case like I see in most pics, it is on the outside of the case....

Sand them down with a wire wheel and drill then paint them. I use High Heat Grill paint. Its flat black, but doesn't cook off. I buy it at walmart. I have had the engine enamel burn off a couple times. Here is the before and after I did just a couple days ago with the grill paint.

Wow evaporust worked great! I used it in the gas tank but want to flush it out, should I just put some gas in it, shake it around and drain it?

Also I completely cleaned out the carb.....took it apart, took the jets out, etc and there was so much rust in parts of it.....I have pics I'll post tomorrow.

I also put the coil in and checked the contact breaker points and the arm didn't start opening until after the F mark passed the mark on the crank case (manual says it should start to open before....I messed with the timing to get it to start opening just as the marks are lining up but the gap is huge, way more then the .12-16mm it should be.....Any ideas? And it is getting absolutely no spark, I hooked everything back up and took the spark plug out and put it against the case as I tried pulling the starter and got no spark whatsoever..... :( Anyone have a coil they want to sell?

mopar_man

If you haven't already, disassemble your carb completely and soak it in pieces. If you're afraid of taking it apart and not knowing how to put it back together, take a lot of pictures along the way.

As for the exhaust, I would get a wire wheel attachment that you can put on a drill to clean it up as best as possible before painting.

Any thoughts on the coil/ignition timing (read my last post)

Or what about this coil? I am sure it is chinese but at least it is new......I can't find but one used 1984 coil....

So like I said I cleaned out the carb! Can't thank you guys enough especially dirt crasher for writing up that how to clean a carb guide. It was so much easier then I thought, I was always intmidated by them for some reason haha

What I did:

Took it completely apart and soaked the pieces in Evaporust for a couple of hours
Started cleaning it with carb cleaner
Cleaned every part with carb cleaner
And re-assembled
Easy as 1-2-3

Who thinks my chain has a little too much slack in it....

Just sitting there it sags this much:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2435/3900000601_127687933c.jpg

The chain tensioner is all the way up too! I think I could easily take out 1 link and not have to lower the tensioner (even though I would). Do you have to take off the left case of the motor to get the chain off?

the evapo rust works great for the gas tank just make sure you rotate it and when all the rust is gone immediatly fill it with gas and throw an inline filter on it for safety. i did this with my 200es big red and it looks great, i'm not sure how great it would be at cleaning a carb as it only attacks rusted metal, and it leaves a carbon residue on everything

I think it was ok, I completely cleaned the carb inside and out with carb cleaner. I have not put gas in the gas tank but I'll do that today!

Also, I talked to my local honda mechanic who helps me out a ton and he said the reason my ATC 70 might not be getting spark is because of the neutral switch. He said when they first came out tons of them had problems with the neutral switch. Has anyone here had that problem?

Thanks to hancadam, I bought a coil from him!

I just ordered a new neutral switch, contact points, flywheel puller and a few other random things from dratv.com! I have no tires I need to go pick up today and have put on (how hard is it to put tires on one of these 70's?)

Looking GOOD!

Glad to hear the carb post helped out :beer

Honestly, my chain is just sloppy. Almost like there is not enough adjustment built into it?? It's a friggen 70!! How much can a 70 chain stretch?? and my sprockets are good, yet I can hear that chain bouncing around in there and I know dam well it's too loose............

I hate to buiy 2 sprockets and a chain right now just to quiet it down :(

Maybe somebody bought the wrong chain? They could've taken the old, stretched chain in, got a new one the same size and that new one stretched way out? The one on my 90 was loose enough that I took it off without moving the tensioner. There was probably 1.5-2" of up and down movement in it.

Yea that's what I am thinking, I gotta find the right size chain....DRAtv can't get the right amount of links and I don't have a chain breaker. What is the OEM size chain? (size and number of links?)

So I added a new coil, new contact points, new spark plug, trimmed the coil wire ends and added a new neutral switch and it starts! Seems to run a little bogged down but that is just in the fine tuning I hope. I noticed it wasn't getting fuel (after I already messed with all the adjustments on the carb.....) that the fuel tank cap wasn't letting air in so it wasn't getting any fuel.....

Anyone have any tips and how to adjust the pilot screw, idle screw etc. The manuals are a bit vague.....
