I know there are a million 70 thread builds going on now but here is one of mine. I am doing all black and silver. The tank, wheels, and forks will be metallic silver the rest black. The set cover I am having made is half black and half silver also. I have'nt decided if I am going to run fenders or not. Leaning towards not. This is basically just a toy for the yard. I will keep posting update throughout the build.

I just ordered this lifan 125cc engine.

Here are the parts so far. Cleaned and painted or just cleaned. The bike was in pretty bad condition.

The only thing with fenders is it will make using the kick start a pain, there expensive, and will make my seat I plan on using not possible.

I have had engines like that before and your right, they suck. I would have still bought it though, I think it was a good deal.

hancadam....Did you paint the frame, fork and wheels yourself? If so did you use a raddle can or a spray gun? I want to repaint my frame, forks, wheels, tank and a few other things but not sure if I'm going to do it myself or have them powder coated. I don't have a lot of time so I'm leaning towards powder coating. Still haven't decided on a engine yet. It's between a Piranha 125cc or 140cc. 70 is looking good. As far as using the kick-start...my cousin has a similar motor and he bump starts it. Fires up every time. He has a 24mm Mikuni carb and different intake and a 2oz rotor in it. Rode it the first of August and that's what got me hooked on building up a 70. I weigh around 175lbs and that 70 with a 125cc Pitster Pro engine in it really ripped. Looking forward to seeing your progress and starting my build also.

Here is an update. Got the engine mounted, all the wiring done. Also new tires mounted. I found out the stock exhaust isn't going to work at all. It doesn't bolt up to the engine. I think I am going to stick with the stock seat and cut down fenders. These are not the fenders I am using, This was to to see what it would look like. These are cracked badly in the back.

Henry89, sorry I didn't see your questions. I used spray paint with lots of sanding. I don't think I can bump start this motor. Kasey states it will only start in neutral. We will see. Should be finished really soon.

They are Kenda Scorpions from Dennis Kirk.

Also the chain fit perfectly under the chain adjuster. Does anyone see any problem with that?

If it has a clutch put it in high gear push it about 15 ft and pop the clutch and drop your knee on the seat and it should start right up, if you watch the mad 70 videos you see us do it all the time, if its a stomp and shift it is hard to get rolling but the same thing works, if you want a cheap pipe look for a pit bike pipe from a crf 50 they are all over ebay and cheap, they are a lot like the pipe Sterdy sells

Thanks race demon. Kasey was under the impression that it would not start unless it was in neutral like his. I just went and checked, and it gets spark when kicking it over in gear. So not sure what Kasey meant, it should start in gear bump starting it.

My local honda mechanic said the ones without a clutch will not start unless in neutral (hence the neutral switch under the left cover.

Doesn't the chain go over the tensioner?

I know its not right, I was just asking if anyone see's a problem running it that way.

Its basically finished, I am just waiting on the exhaust. I am pretty happy with how it turned out. Can't wait to ride it. I used a rubber coating for the fenders. I really like how well that worked out. Also have a new chain and grips coming for it. Should be 100% done then.

hancadam...Here is a link for a Cobra exhaust. Not sure what you classify as cheap but sounds really good with that motor. Just need a exhaust gasket and spacer and it bolts up fine. The exhaust for the 70 is on the bottom of the page on the left. The exhaust gasket and spacer are on page 2.

Schmee just did one of these in the shop with the same motor, the 70 exhaust did NOT work. The stocker bolted up fine. Are you having issues with headpipe fitment inside the motor? That's where the issue was on his. The spacer allows the mounting of the cobra?

Also, you may want to watch your switchpod, the electrical system on the one in the shop roasted the switch after about 1 minute of run time.

It started immediately and ran for a bit before crapping out. It was still throwing a nice spark when cranked, but the spark was NOT enough to start the motor. Bypassing the switch, we were able to get proper spark until a better switchpod can be had.

A warning, change your oil BEFORE running the engine. Once you drain the oil you'll see why, it's more like syrup than motor oil.

I may have missed it, but schmee would be very interested in what intake setup you used to run the carb with the metal tank? Without denting the tank it was impossible to run a metal one with the provided intake.

Looking VERY nice. The pullstarter conversion works great on these motors, and they start easily with it. I've also had the idea of bending the kicker and mounting it forward, it might be possible to simply grab the kicker at a low point and pop it upward by hand to start.

Goodluck with the rest and keep the updates coming bud.

Thanks for the advice Goat.

Yes, the stock pipe would need a spacer to work. It needs about a 1 1/4 to bolt up tight. I just bought a cheap CRF50 Exhaust off ebay for it. Should be here tomorrow. I can't wait ti start it up. I just realized I haven' put any fuel line on yet either.

And yes again. This is my 4th Lifan. They come with what I consider shipping oil in them. Does not look or feel like motor oil at all.

The intake that came with the Lifan worked perfect for me. The tank does touch it and I added a couple washers to where it bolts to the frame for spacing.

I didn't put a kill switch on it. I left the two wires at an easy spot to get too if I decide to put one on it later. I figured I would just choke it out for now.

Thanks again.

As for starting. I think I am just going to do the bump starting. Once I get a little more money I will probably get Maier black fenders.

I will go out and check tomorrow. I found it at Freds of all places. It works really really well. It thick and textured so its very forgiving. I will let you know.

I bought a similar set up for my 83 70. I got the lifan 125 and it came with a 24mm mikuni. It wouldnt fit under the metal tank but I managed to use a plastic one I had and cocked it sideways a bit. As far as the exhaust issue, well the stock 70 pipe bolted up fine but to get better flow i chopped a bit of the spark arrester off. It sounds pretty good and runs a lot better. Once i get a few more things done I can post some pics.

The cobra I had in the shop wouldnt fit right on the lifan. I thought about the sterdy pipe but figured a little chopping on the stock pipe is easier and doesn't cost $200.

I do have one question though, Does anyone run the lifan 125 with the 24mm mikuni? if so, where did you get your intake? It is just really tight in there and the carb is tall. I am hesitant to order an intake unless i know for sure it works. Any help is appreciated.
