Ok i have a nice little ATC stash going on now. My first question is, why does my 82 and 84 shift the same (5 down) and my 85 shift different (5 up)? Lol, that was fun to figure out. Next question, the 85 is a 200m and smokes a bit. my 82 is a frank'n'trike 200 with a rebuilt topend. switchable? can take pics if needed no problem. 82 is now going to be stripped down and parted out between the two newer ones. i have more question but forgot them right now, lol. thanks for any help guys....

I have no friggin clue why Honda EVER made a shifting pattern that UP is Down??

The 70's are just as bad, it would take allot for me to get use to a backwards pattern........

Ya man, it really confused the heck out of me..... next question, i have some noise coming from the topend when running, most apparent when idling. sound like the cam chain to me. Is the adjuster really that easy? also do i really need a RPM guage to do this @ 1400 rpm like my service manual says??

my 84 200s shifts downward and I love it, I just have to remember that the rules are different when I ride other machines

A quick answer to the shift pattern change - (which was done in 1985 for the most part). It was done as a safety issue. It is easier to shift down then to shift up - so for gearing down - to slow down it makes it easier.

I learned this years ago on the sport bike scene. Alot of racers would alter their shift linkage to shift down instead of up. You can stay tucked down low and just push your toe down much easier than lifting the shifter for harder acceleration - doing just the opposite of what the Honda engineers had in mind.

Safety is also the reason neutral is between 1st and second on sport buggies - it won't let you shift the whole way down into neutral unexpectedly.
