I recently picked up a 84 250r off craigs list. Something is shot in it though and cannot figure out what the problem is. I took the motor to a techy and he told me it would be 150 for him to just look and it and that is before any work is done. This is my first time digging into one of these looking for some ideas on opions. The motor runs but will not engage into a gear. You can shift it but wheels still spin freely. Clutch plates look fine. The techy told me that he thought it was in the transmission. Wondering if there are other motors I can put in it or find something to make it work. I have access to all tools needed to weld new brackets if needed for new mounts. Any advise is welcome and is much help.

nothing will fit that frame without ALOT of work not only becouse of the design but also the fact that motor is right hand chain as oposed to most motors being left hand chain. In the end you will spend far more wedging something else in there then getting the trans fixed.. sounds like a shift fork is bad.

Have you inspected the external shift mechanism to see if it is making contact and allowing the changing of gears? Check the manual if you are unsure.
If you have a good torch and welder, anything is possible. Otherwise im pretty sure you can use the air cooled 250r motors from first generation to second from the years or 1981-82 and second gen 1983-84. They should be a direct bolt in, maybe someone else will correct me if im wrong. I know the 83-84 motors were a little better, and had a few upgrades in the bottom end and transmission to make them more durable. You could even try to find a late 70's Honda CR 250 motor, and it should be somewhat close, and if you have the equipment to make the motor fit, more power to ya. Good luck, ----- Jon.

Excuse me if im wrong here, but I thought I remembered from a while back about switching the axle around?

wont work, thats if you switch the axle with a 200x, if you flip it on the R you will have to make new brake mounts and mod the frame for clearence on the left side.

get a different bottom end if necessary and swap.tear into it and see whats up.get a manual and work methodically.you might be able to fix it.

What he said.

Swap bottom ends, then rebuild the one you took off. pick up a top end cheap and rebuild it. Great practice, you get a spare motor out of it and you still have something to ride while you work on it.

$150 just to tear into it is ludicris! If you can't do the work, take it to a different shop. Those motors are not complex or hard to work on. It takes about a 1/2 hour to tear that motor down with it out of the frame already.
