I will keep my eyes open for it. Maybe I will go unload the dirtbike from the truck instead of leaving it for the night. I was thinking about this last week when I left the 350x in the truck for 2 nights.

thanks i appreciate you guys keeping your eyes open, yes fox, cant leave anything outside these days, or even INside without a lock for that matter!
edit: by the way, it doesnt have the winch on it anymore but the gun rack was still on it and it looks the same besides the winch.

That sucks. Do you have the VIN written down?
stoney420
09-17-2009, 08:48 PM
yes, i have the registration as i bought it from the original owner...gave the vin to the trooper and it is now in their database..
well i just went out and recoverd the 84 from the field, whoever the scumbag was they sure as hell dont know how to ride one AT ALL, it wasnt out of gas or anything, started right up, the wheeler was in 5th gear and the kill switch was off(i always leave the switch on and use the key) im not sure what this means tho but it was sitting as soon as u walk through the tree line into the field so i think they pushed it over there and couldnt get it started (somehow turned the kill switch off not knowing it or thought off meant run?) and switched through the gears hoping it would help? or maybe they did get it running but it wouldnt move in 5th gear ofcourse so they turned it off using the kill switch and left it?? the key was turned to on but i dont think it was all the way over to ON so maybe thats why it wouldnt start and they played with the killswitch and gears hoping it would help? i dont know, it confuses me, but either way there clueless about atvs so that tells me it was probably some punk little kids. anyway i sure hope to see my 83 home soon but im afraid its highly unlikely :(

my sled was stolen last winter by a 17 or 18 year old punk. the cops didnt do much its a long story but me and my girlfriend ended up finding the kid with my aftermarket parts on his sled. 6 months later i got his sled 700 bucks and my sled that was chopped into pieces. i won a lot of races with that sled its just not the same racing his chassis.
it is very very frusterating but dont give up look everywhere. i drove around every day for 2 weeks. im in upstate ny and will keep an eye out!!

well i found the path they took it, so now i know they didnt drive down the road, theres only one trail going from my house to the main trail (powerline trail) and it was posted off a while back so has not been used at all, well i didnt see any tracks at first but kept riding and came across some knobby tire tracks (which mine were knobbys) so i kept going and got to the muddy area and there they were KNOBBY 3 WHEELER TRACKS!!!(im the only one on this road with a 3 wheeler) so after following them a little ways i came to a big mudhole where they got stuck and couldnt keep going straight, foot tracks all over from them trying to get it out, i can see where they went off the trail right there since they couldnt keep going straight but it is hard to tell where it went from there since its all thick woods down trees etc etc i had to turn around cause my 85 i was riding has a big hole in the front tire that i plugged until i put a new one on it and was getting too flat to keep going but rest assured im going back out there to try and see where the trail goes, anyway i came home and went to look in the yard at my cousins house (a likely suspect) who i havent talked to in 3 or 4 years since he broke in my house, i didnt see anything but i did see one of his neighbors outside so i stopped to see if he has seen a 3 wheeler over there, he must not get along with them either and wants nothing to do with them, said he wasnt trying to be rude but would not get involved, the only thing he would tell me is that "he seen a red 3 wheeler and a red 4 wheeler on a trailer over there a few days ago, and cops are there all the time" and i even had to pry that out of him!!! and yesterday i had my mother call my aunt (his mom) who is just as crooked thats where he got it from and she said she hasnt seen a 3 wheeler but would keep her eyes open, take pics if she seen it etc etc which is very UNlike her since we dont get along...she would never try to help me out so i was kinda iffy when she said that, and now i find out his neighbor seen one over there!!! so im almost positive im on the right track here but finding it is going to be the problem :( waiting on the trooper to call me back so i can give him the update info, hopefully we can go get there footprints from that mud and what the neighbor said should help but since he wasnt willing to help me im not sure he would make a statement for the trooper or anything :( anyway im off to see what i can come up with... wish me luck...

i was thinking the same stoney, but she already knew, the trooper went there immediately after leaving here yesterday and told her he was looking for a missing 3wheeler from smithridge road...she let him look in the garage etc but obviously it was no where in plain site...the cop told her he was just checking the neighborhood but she knew better, after he left she called here, knowing it was me, and asked if we sent the cops over there...so thats how that came about..

thanks for the all the kind words guys.... now i just gotta sit here and do nothing about it while i wait 3 hours for the damn cops to call me back so i can give them the updated info.. called about an hour ago and talked to dispatch, she said she would call the trooper who was here yesterday and have him call me, havent heard from him yet, just called again hoping to talk her and see if she contacted him and when he should be calling but was some how put straight through to a different trooper who was on a call, said he'd call back around 5, which is about another hour from now, i dont want to go anywhere and miss their call so now im stuck sitting here, doing nothing about it, waiting. i realize there busy people but DAMMIT i want my wheeler back!! lol, but ofcourse i wasnt rude or pushy with them cause i need their help... so im just waiting....

wow, unbeleiveable i just got another lead!!! this kid Nick Russell who hangs out with my cousin, has a trailer sitting in his yard with a red 4 wheeler on it, when the cop called back(was a different cop then the first one) i told him about this and about the neighbor seeing a red 3 wheeler and red 4 wheeler in my cousins driveway on a trailer, and he said HE ACTUALLY PULLED OVER NICK RUSSELL ON TUESDAY AND HE WAS HAULING A RED 3 WHEELER AND RED 4 WHEELER ON A TRAILER !!!!!!!! he is now on his way to russells house!!! i cant beleive this cop actually seen him hauling the trailer that was in my cousins yard!!!! thats my best evidence so far!!! man, i should have became an investigator!!!! ofcourse the cop knows russell had one so whats he going to say when the cop wants to see it again??? its gone??? im sure that wont be acceptable to the officer....

stoney420
09-18-2009, 07:16 PM
wish i had some for you ditchmud, but i dont :( just heard back from the trooper, noone was home at the russells residence, but he did see a 3 wheeler there, so he looked at it and said it didnt match the description i gave him, which was, 83 honda big red, red in color, front and rear racks, gun rack on rear rack which may not be there anymore and told him how the rims were once painted red then were painted over again gray/silver and therefore had red showing through the silver, which you can see clearly, (pics page 1), he said the rims was the main thing he looked at but they did not look as decribed or look freshly painted. and he said he beleives this is the one he seen on the trailer :(.. i was so sure that the one on the trailer would be mine.....anyway he stopped and talked to one of russells neighbors and they said they have seen another one over there, a bigger one (im not sure what size the one he seen was) and is coming over at 10:30 tomorrow morning to get pictures of mine, etc etc..so all is not lost yet, but not looking as good as it was... :( ...on a side note... ANYONE IN THIS AREA, LOCK, DOUBLE LOCK, TRIPLE LOCK YOUR TOYS!!!! HE SAID THEY HAVE HAD NUMEROUS(MORE THEN A FEW) ATV'S ATC'S DIRTBIKES AND SNOWMOBILES COME UP MISSING VERY RECENTLY FROM THIS AREA!!!!! a dirtbike, and a 3wheeler from 2 different houses on black creek road, a 4 wheeler and sled on chestnut ridge, a couple others and now mine on smith ridge come up stolen very recently. all these roads are within a 3 mile radius of me!!!! he alsosaid one guy on black creek road woke up to some noise one night last week and seen a couple people loading up his 4 wheeler in their "large pickup truck" just as he was about to run out the door a car was coming down the road so the people left the wheeler in the middle of the road, jumped in the truck and took off!!! so LOCK UP YOUR TOYS, DOUBLE LOCK THEM, TRIPLE LOCK THEM IF YOU HAVE TO!!! well im off to go have some very much needed drinks, will update again in the morning after the cop comes over..

Best of luck! Hopefully you stumble upon a garage full of stolen toys. Then everyone's happy and the stealer/s go in for a few years time.
I had a pickup stolen from me once and they caught the 3 guys 2 years later. Turns out they were going around taking "For Sale" vehicles for "test drives" and getting keys made. They would then wait for one week, if the vehicle wasn't sold they would wait till the owners weren't home and drive off with the vehicle. Some they stripped and sold the parts and some they beat the crap out of (mine for instance). The troopers found about a dozen vehicles.
I ended up getting restitution and the original "for sale" price of the vehicle.
Another thing to watch out for... If you're selling a vehicle know who's taking it for that test drive.
Again, best of luck and hope your trike is not too badly beaten.

completely spray bombed black :(
just like i thought in the first place it was my little trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro F*CKING COUSIN!!!!
the plan didnt work out as we had hoped, we had a guy that was going to buy it for $100 and catch him with it in the act, instead we went out on there property and seen it/recoverd it since the cops wouldnt go through with the buy idea :( .
we dont really have any solid concrete evidence linking him to it besides it was in the woods on their property, a couple neighbors did see him riding it while it was red, then again while it was black, the guy that was going to buy it didnt really want to get involved, i just hope he will fill out a statement... ill know how solid the case is on friday when the cop takes everyones statements, and gets all the evidence together.... i just hope they can nail this f^cker to the wall and get me some restitution money to get a new wheeler, there no way this can be restored to the condition it was without all brand new parts :( :(

Try some acetone and other types of thinners on a place that doesn't matter so much before you go nuts. Powerwashing may help in the beginning.

Sorry to hear about the shape it's in, but I'm glad you got it back. It should be fairly easy to get the paint off, since they probly didn't sand or primer it, a power washer should blow it right off. Good luck on getting the black beauty back to a bigred.

hes 20. and i refuse to end up in jail over this little pipsqueek.
also, if this or anything like this ever happens to anyone, do not rely on the cops, you need to follow your gut if u have an idea who it is and do some investigating yourself, especially if its the new york state troopers, they treat it like its just a normal job and your making them do work, your only hope with the cops is to pray you find one who rides or is truly sympathetic and truly wants to try to help but good luck finding one like that. the 2 officers i dealt with could care less wether it was found or not, 1 of them actually did try to help a little, only because he was concerned that so many have come up missing. but i dont recommend dealing with the new york state troopers around here, if i ever have a problem again, ill be calling our local sherriffs instead. i know they can only do so much, i completely understand the process's they have to go through, but i pay close attention to detail, and they honestly could have cared less. if u happen to live in the area, trooper rodman is the guy to avoid if you can help it.

don't use acetone, it will kill all the paint, factory paint included. Spray paint can be removed with gas on a rag, if that is not working use carb cleaner on a rag. make sure you get pictures of the machine in its sad state BEFORE you clean it up, these will be very useful in court. make sure you get all the police paperwork and then go file in small claims court...

thanks brapp i was planning on going for restitution, but didnt think about going through honda! great idea, that will be very expensive :)
what are the parts i should try to make him pay for?
front fender, rear fenders, gas tank, headlight, maybe new rims? cost of whatever paint stripper is used, cost of labor for a shop to clean the rest of it up? any reason i wouldnt be able to get these? the only thing is, like an idiot i told the trooper i paid $600 for the wheeler, so im sure thats the most ill be able to get..i want to get as much out of him as possible and as many charges as possible, the cop said he probably couldnt be charged with burgalary since the garage is a "portable garage" and doesnt have a permanent foundation, so it will prolly be larseny instead, will try to get trespassing as well, and the property he took off with it at and left the other trike is posted so i think my neighbor should be able to get him for trespassing as well. any other ideas? i dont know the legal terms off the top of my head, but shouldnt i also be able to sue him for the stress etc that he has put me through? i know theres a word for it, just cant remember.. anyone know? any other ideas?

i know nada says it aint worth nothin and the court will prolly go by that but i hope they dont :(, im hoping i can find a couple selling for high dollar to give them examples, etc.
i just got back from the honda dealer and for new rear fenders, new front fender, mud flaps, gas tank, headlight case, and fork boots, which was all i could think of that would have to be replaced right off the top of my head came to a whopping $1151.08, thats without any labor replacing parts, stripping paint off the parts that arent replaced, etc. i didnt get an official quote on the actual job since he would have had to charge me an hours labor ($68) for an official quote. i told him i would wait until the kid is actually arrested before going that route. im sure the court wont go by this and ill prolly get the measely $400 that nada quotes, but i sure hope not. anyone seen any high dollar big reds selling lately that i could use as reference, or anyone want to put an ad on Craigslist "selling" their big red for high dollar $$? :D

Goof off works great at removing spray paint, it is for removing graffitti painted on signs and stuff. I think Walmart sells it. I would take him to small claims court. Get a signed and verifeid estimate from the Honda dealer, also do up an estimate with after market parts plus labor to return it to its former glory. The court will usually split the differance, or give 3/4 the price of the Honda stuff. Also take lots of pics before you clean it or fix anything on it. Bring pics of it before and pics how you got it back to court. I am sure you would win in small claims court and the loser would have to pay all court costs. Also get noterized letters from friends stating condition before and after. Glad you got it back..

thanks for the advice pipeline, i think i will deffinetally be winning in small claims court, i cant see any reason why not, the only thing im wondering about is how much ill end up gettin from this ordeal, i want to nail his azz to the wall if possible .. just waiting till tomorrow when the trooper gets all the info, statements, warrant, etc then goes and arrests the little thief.. dont know why he needed to wait 3 days to do it, but its all supposed to happen tomorrow....
any advice i can get how to go about getting as much as possible is very much appreciated i sure hope i dont get 400 which is prolly about what it books for, ...things i have been doing are..
1..got a quote from honda for replacement parts, 1200 worth, and thats only fenders/mudflaps, tank, forkboots, headlight case, so its not like i went nuts.. thats not to mention labor for changing the parts, and stripping paint off the other parts that arent replaced...i dont want to waste money on an official estimate to repair it since i know it will be alot more then what ill end up getting for the bike but do you guys think i should do it anyways for proof? i know the gas tank will be cheaper to re do then buy one($450), and the court may mention that, but as for the plastics etc it would be cheaper to get new ones then pay them to fix them.. either way its more then the court will give me...
2.. found some trikes online to show that they DO sell for more then blue book says...(some on ebay, with a winning buyer to show they did sell for that amount) no rediculous expensive ones either) i dont want them to think im being ridiculous and have it ruin my credibility, just want them to see they do sell for a good amount more then bluebook)
3.. worse comes to worse i have my receipt when i bought it for 600 (which was actually a steal in my opinion, orig owner, old guy, hardly used, shop maintained, etc..) .... i think i should atleast get my 600 back but that might even hurt my case if they feel i shouldnt get the full amount i paid for it, which i could see happening.. maybe ill forget that at home?..
on top of the restitution for the wheeler i think i should be able to get some money out of him for putting me through this somehow, i know theres a few different legal terms for it, just cant think of them, maybe i should contact a lawyer about this, anyone know if he would have to pay the lawyer fees?
anyone been through anything like this or have advice? feel free to chime in...

yea i know it will take awhile to get the money, but if he dont pay willingly the court can take his tax returns, which wont be much im sure and garnish his wages if he ever gets a job, etc. i dont mind waiting, as long as i get it, that will just be longer he has to deal with me :) ..
noone has any advice to nail his ass in court?

I bought a three 185S that someone had given a camo paint job to. I bought this stuff called KRUD KUTTER from wal-mart and it took the paint off with a little elbow grease. It didn't harm the finish on the fenders or on the tank and it looked nice when it was done.

Heh, I can relate to your problems with both people "close" (well, sorta) to you stealing your stuff and the police's inefficiency at taking care of this stuff... had a "friend" steal my 110 a couple years ago, my dad and I cruised around the whole town looking for it a couple times, nada, didn't find anything... filed a report, had the PD lookin' for it. Then I'm walking through town a week later and the thing is just sitting next to a stop sign, chillin'. In the middle of town. And it had been there for almost the entire day, because the thieves, as it turns out, rode it at night. So apparently not a single cop drove through that intersection for almost 15 hours or so, in a town of 4000 people and no streetlights. Amazing.
Damage was pretty bad, you should be happy your cousin didn't beat on it too hard. Mine had a cracked frame near the steering stem, it flexed really bad and the trike was unrideable. Fenders were cracked, bars were bent and the throttle and brake levers were damaged pretty good too. Pretty sure the grab bar was bent. Turns out my "friend" came over at about 3am one night after I had parked it in the backyard and started it up and just drove away. Thing didn't have a key or any sort of lock on it, but heck, we never locked our front door either, and I always left my bike by the porch unlocked.
His dad ended up covering for him, even though a lot of people I talked to said that he was the one who stole it, and a couple were actually with him when he was riding it, letting other people ride it, wreck it, etc. We never got anything for it.
The guy got what was coming to him, though. Busted for breaking and entering and theft and lots of other interesting things a year or so later. No pity.
Keep your chin up, man.

IDK about YOUR states laws but:
I lent a guy I worked with 1000$, he claimed to have cancer and was gonna lose his home because of the hospital bills.
Promised me 300$ that weekend when he "installed a boiler" - this went on for months.
I finally took him to small claims, he never showed up and I won the judgement including the fees.
Problem is, they DO NOT ENFORCE repayment. And if they DO get arrested (for a triffic violation or otherwise) and the judgement shows up, all he has to say when they drag him into court is "I can pay 20$ a month, I have a family" and thats the end of it.......
Lock your stuff up, lock the building, use an alarm and set up a motion activated camera if you can. Thats about all you can do as the criminal has plenty of rights even though he's a POS :(

If you win in small claims court there is TONS of things the courts can do for you. but will they? who knows. for something this size. and him being a kid. dont expect them to do a whole lot. there going to slap him on the wrist and you may get your restitution. but when? could be never. depends on how much they wana throw at him.

In MI small claims are pretty much like dc says. The small claims court can award you a settlement but they do not have means to enforce. If he doesn't pay it just goes on his record as a bad debt.

cops were supposed to meet with everyone today, me, his neighbors, the person he had tried to sell it to, etc and get all the statements/info together.. called once and dispatch said she would have him call..
.. i never got a phone call from em... but they did stop by his house today thats about all i know so far..

well just thought id give a little update on the little punk...
turns out the trooper handling the case was transferd to a different department, so a new one was put on the case, and what do ya know - 2 weeks after a different(or should i say better) trooper took over the case, the little punk has finally been arrested friday morning and is facing 18, YES, i said 18!! counts of burglary, theft, larseny etc etc apparently the little prick has been doing alot more theft than what i even thought he was. there has been alot of 4 wheelers,dirtbikes,3 wheelers, a gator 6 wheeler and other things come up missing lately and they are linking atleast 80% of the machines to him (joshua bender) and his buddy "turtle" (real name is something sacrin, forgot first name) they have recoverd a total of 7 machines so far from his woods(yes the same woods where mine was recoverd 2 months ago, IDIOT!) and his friends woods down the street from him. atleast 6 felonys so far and they were just getting started. needless to say that really made my day! even tho i wont be getting any money for a long time(if ever) since he probably has around 40-50 grand in restitution to pay out i dont even care about that anymore, im just glad hes where he belongs right now as i type this! they picked them up on friday and you cant get bailed out on the weekend, so he is there until atleast monday when his mom is going to go put her house on the line to make his $25,000 bond. she deserves whatever she gets as well since she is just as crooked and raised him, and his brother to be the way they are, when it comes right down to it, its actually not his fault, its HERS.
im done ranting now, thanks for allowing me a space to do so :beer

lol, well i didnt attempt to clean the plastic or tank until tonight, the light overspray on the engine did come off pretty easily with just some gas and a little scrub, tonight i tried some experimenting on the plastic, brake cleaner and brake fluid didnt work very well but i didnt let it sit either since i dont know what it will do to the plastic, oven cleaner did work pretty good with a little scrubbin, i only let it sit about 30 mins since it was just a tester, i think letting it sit longer will work pretty well. carb cleaner works good but dries up to quick. the thing that took it off the fastest was this stuff called "oops" but it started to fade the plastic white, so thats out. theres a couple other things i want to try but just used stuff that i already had around the house for tonight, ill keep ya updated..any suggestions are more then welcome..

I used Interlux fiberglass paint remover on a set of Polaris fenders that I had and it worked great. Took the paint right off and didn't harm the plastic. Any marina/marine store should be able to get it for you.

I'd say thats for your rubber bumper covers on todays cars and trucks that are going to be painted, so it might discolor the plastic. I'd so a spot test.

Try using the oven cleaner, and then hitting it with the power washer when its soft...
also find you an auto paint store and ask about BUMPER STRIPPER its made for plastic and eurathane bumpers and it strips the paint without harming the bumper underneath, should work fine for everything you need to use it on.

thorpe i did try lettin the oven cleaner(easy-off brand) soak about an hour then hit it with the ol garden hose on the "jet" setting, it worked decent but i would have to do it a few times and still scrub quite a bit to get it all off i think, but it does seem to work.. i dont have a power washer yet, maybe now is a good excuse for me to go buy one...............
i should be all set for the plastics with the info i have so far but wouldnt turn down some more tips of what to/ and what Not to try lol..,
anyone have any suggestions for the gas tank? is there any way i can take off the sh!tty spray paint without taking off the factory paint/finish on it? or if i do have to strip it and repaint, does anyone know what color honda used, or what the closest match available is? its not a showbike, its a rider so it dont have to be perfect, just want it nice again..
also, what can i use to take the heavier spray paint off the engine without having to paint it afterwards? gas worked for the lighter spray but not the thick stuff..

funny story. When I was like 3 years old, my parents had just gotten a new car, (1990 subaru legacy), they had a full garden going. it had everything from potatos to apples. They were also painting the house. (for years our house was known as the tyvek house because thats all that was covering it) anyways, they had a big bucket of paint, and some freshly picked brocoli sitting right next together, right next to the new car. so i waddle up in my pull ups, dip the brocoli in the paint, and proceed to paint the car white. that wasnt exactly one of smartest things ive done.......... so for the last 15 years, we've been driving around a blue subaru with a giant white splotch on the front. I'm going to be driving this car soon, so i decided it was time to get rid of that splotch. not wanting to harm the paint underneath too much, or spend bookoo money on chemicals and stuff, i just used steel wool, then polished and waxed the slightly roughed up base paint.
So i would try using an abrasive. is the entire tank painted, or just the visible parts?
stoney420

well i couldnt find the kleen strip for plastic that i wanted but they had a different brand i bought made by 'bulldog' for stripping paint from bumpers and it worked pretty well but im sure theres a better product out there, had to do it a couple times to get it all off, figured now was a good time to invest in a pressure washer and that helped alot. heres a before pic, a pic of the rear fender after 1 application of stripper then pressure wash and a pic of the front fender after 2 applications of stripper and a pressurewash, as you can see the rear still needs another coat but its gettin there. the front turned out great after second coat tho no black left anywhere!
is there anything that works good to bring back the color where i used this stuff called "oops" and it faded it?... OOPS! lol, and hide the light scratches from me scrubbin on it before i broke down and got the pressure washer?
not sure why my gray cement floor looks blue or why the front looks to have a little black at the bottom, it doesnt - my camera sucks...

Yea the stripper for bumpers will usualy take a few applications to remove everything, there designed not to penetrate as hard as a regular stripper. Looks good man glad its all cleaning up well.
